Newington Schools Skip Halloween Parades, Parties - Hartford Courant

I don't know about anyone else, but growing up every kid I knew participated in Halloween. Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, Hindu, black, white and Latino. There was (and is) nothing religious about it - just a day to put on a costume and get some candy. I do think Halloween is getting a bit overdone - it seems like everyday for the past week my kids have had some sort of Halloween event. But this seems like an awfully extreme response.

Yeah, I had that same reaction initially. But then I reconsidered. Halloween is paganism wrapped up in Christianity, then turned twentieth century commercialized. For some kids, it's in direct conflict with their religious beliefs. So, I guess it cannot be celebrated in school. Would be nice if they could have a costume parade, without calling it a Halloween parade, sometime the week beforehand. But imagine if your family and church have taught you that Halloween is pagan and against your religious beliefs, and then you have to stay away from the class Halloween party. Better not to have a celebration that would put a child through that kind of pain.

But I sure do feel bad for kids who are not permitted to dress up and trick or treat! My kids say that Halloween and their birthdays are the best days of the year.

They changed Halloween party to Fall party and Christmas party to Winter party, and Christmas break to Winter break. What a bunch of crap!!!!!! We are way to politically correct here IMO.

I never considered Halloween a holiday. Just buy the kids some candy and throw a party at home if it's that serious. And who cares what they call the school breaks?

That seems pretty absurd if you are changing school policy because of some fringe religious groups that represent a small percentage of the student body. Do they also ban birthdays since the Jehovah's Witnesses don't celebrate them?

Lol, to be honest, it doesn't really phase me.

I do think it's interesting to see how people want separation of Church and State, yet, don't want Christian elements to go away at the same time. This country's Founding Fathers believed in God, but, not necessarily the Christianity many follow today.
