Hi all, I will be relocating to CT to work at Yale. I found a pretty affordable apartment on Fairfield street. I believe this is in the Amity community. Is this a good neighborhood? I called the school district to inquire about which school my first grader will be placed given this address and they said he will not be able to go to schools in the area because they are all magnet schools and the lottery isn't open yet. They then told me that he will have to be placed somewhere outside of the district. What are the implications? Are there other affordable neighborhoods? I am looking to spend $1200 or less on a 2 bedroom.
New Haven schools, overall, seriously under perform to state standards. If you have children, you really wouldn't want to send them to New Haven public schools. If you can use private or parochial schools that would be much better.
I would look for apartments in the towns of Orange & North Haven first, then add in Branford & Milford. These are safe, pleasant towns with good public school systems and easy distance to Yale. Woodbridge is also a great town but I'm not sure if you're going to find much in the way of rentals.
The magnet schools are great. Others, eh. That's a great part of New Haven but the non-magnet schools suffer. You'd be better off in nearby Orange, Woodbridge, Milford, etc for schools.
I am not sure what the OP will find in those towns with their budget. I would also consider looking in adjacent towns like Hamden, West Haven or East Haven as well. The scoops aren't great but they are better than New Haven. Jay

I take it you took the dog for a walk this morning or you have ice cream on your mind?
Hamden should be doable on that budget. East Haven, IIRC, lags Hamden in school performance. Since we're discussing towns that are essentially just a notch better than New Haven schools, you could throw Derby into the mix also. A condo or very small home at the Derby/Orange line might be within the OP's budget. Humdrum schools of course, but a safe community.

I agree. The magnet schools are great and those I know with children in the schools love it (particularly the Engineering and Science University magnet). However, it is a lottery and your choice is not guaranteed. By saying your child would have to attend "outside the district" do they mean out of New Haven or didthey mean in a New Haven school that is not a magnet?
For what it's worth, Fairfield St. itself is a perfectly fine area. The only sketchy area around there is on the other side of Whalley off of Valley Street.
