Hi All

The day before christmas we have to drive from Fredericksburg, VA all the way to Fairfield, CT. We hope to leave at 1:00pm. Normally We do this 3 days before christmas, but this year we can't do that because I have something at work I'd like to get started on before I take the holiday, so it won't work to leave earlier. Also we cannot leave earlier than 1:00pm.

Normally I would just take I-95 N all the way streight through, but we all know that I-95 from Fredericksburg to Fairfield will arguably be the worst traffic nightmare in all of the USA on christmas eve. If I take that route I will be having to go through D.C and New York City which have horrible traffic jams even on normal rush hour days, probably be much worse on christmas eve.

I looked at google maps and mapped out a route like this: Take VA-3 E, to Rt 301 N crossing the bridge to the western shore of Maryland, then continuing on Rt 301 across the Chesapeake Bay Bride towards MD Eastern Shore, and just after entering delaware get on DL-1 N. Take that to I-95 N, to I-476 N, to I-78 E, to I-287 N crossing the Tappan Zee Bridge, and then taking the Merritt Pkwy to Fairfield. I have been on parts of this route before but never on national holidays. Anyone know if this route is any better? Anyone second this route?

Also if you have another route in mind, please suggest it here?

Our plan is if we hit traffic anytime after 5pm, we stop and eat dinner, because we have to stop for dinner anyway, and I thought it would be good to wait until there is traffic since we know we will face at least some, and then eat dinner. I know the routes are very toll costly as well, but I'd prefer to pay more in tolls than sit in standstills with heavy traffic.

Please give me ideas on routes?

Use Google Maps or Waze and let it guide you around traffic. It's very hard to predict the best route in that stretch.

I would not take that route. I would go out to Warrenton and take 29 north to 15, then take 15 all the way up to Harrisburg PA to 581 to 81 to 78 to 287. You'll hit traffic going into Leesburg on 15 but otherwise it shouldn't be bad.

I should elaborate, Fairfield is about 1 to 1.5 hours on from Brooklyn. Depending on traffic.

Not really, we'd like to be at our families house by christmas eve, to rap presents and everything.

Is that route worth the extra mileage? It seems like way out of my way?

I drive to eastern Georgia from NW Hartford County at least twice a year and always take 84-81-77. There are no tolls on the way down, $1.25 on the way back, and I only hit traffic coming back to CT, pretty much from Danbury or Newtown to Waterbury, where I hit RT. 8 north.
From Winchester VA to my house is about 7 hours. There's a great dive diner on exit 17 on 84 in PA if you want a bite to eat.

El Scorcho.

Yeah, but Eastern Georgia, and Winchester are west. Fredericksburg is kind of on the east coast of virginia, so I-81 would be way out of my way, because I would have to go at least 85 miles west and then all the way back east again in pennsylvania. Do you know exactly where Fredericksburg is? I have a feeling your not exactly sure.
