Which city/town do you think is more desirable, in your opinion?

The median home value in West Hartford is $303K. The median home value in Norwalk is $424K. Despite the grittiness that exists in Norwalk, homes are generally significantly more expensive. Meanwhile, I believe West Hartford has better schools, lower crime, less traffic and more interesting shopping. Norwalk arguably has better nightlife and dining, but West Hartford holds its own in the dining category. Norwalk is a coastal city, with ports and shipyards, as well as Metro North access. Norwalk has a lot more young people. West Hartford is geared a little more toward older people.

Anyway, I think this would be an interesting debate.

Go!

At least seasonally, Norwalk has WH beat in the summer, the beach, festivals in SoNo, the aquarium, boats, concerts, outdoor restaurants. But WH has a nicer downtown, more vibrant and in better shape, Norwalk let theirs atrophy and now its too spread out, not as walkable as WH.

If the job situations were equal, I would choose West Hartford over Norwalk in a heartbeat. However, Norwalk provides access to many more jobs (at least for my industry, marketing) so that automatically makes it more desirable.

I prefer West Hartford over Norwalk on every level. The coastal argument doesn't even matter to me as the beaches in Norwalk are not good. With exception to Rowayton which is very pretty. Norwalk does have good dining but WH takes a slight edge there for me with much less turnover.

Norwalk is more expensive because of proximity to NYC and FFC employment. Period.

I think Fairfield is a more apt comparison to WH. Which, cost of living aside, I do prefer to West Hartford.

Norwalk is only more expensive because it's commutable to NYC.

On every other measure West Hartford is a better place to live. I don't think many people who are relocating are considering both towns...

Not a fair comp. City vs satelite suburb of Hartford. Hartford vs Norwalk is more suitable. I wonder which wins

I fail to see the appeal of either.

West Hartford has some of the best dining in the state. By far better than Norwalk. Also West Hartford has some of the best shopping as well with Blue Back Square, West Hartford Center and Westfarms Mall. I agree with Stylo that there is no comparison between the two. Norwalk is a small city. West Hartford is an affluent mature suburb. I agree Fairfield would be much more Comparable. Jay
