Most likely the fee was for storing the vehicle for however long it took for the op to get it properly registered. I'm just guessing as this has never happened to me.

It was the towing time length

And I never got anything in the mail

They don't always get it to you in the mail is the reason why

You have to think to go into your glove compartment and remind yourself that usually 24 months after you register your new car, that's expiration month. If you don't memorize this and don't start touching up on the junk in your glove compartment, you could just land yourself out $1,300 bucks

I think CT does a good job with that.

Same goes for emmisions.
Yup, same with me. No complaints or need to check here.

Yet another reason to evade property taxes by registering your car out of state, since the towns and dmv have no motivation to enforce the in state registration law.

It's not so much lack of motivation as it is lack of resources. We all know CT will milk us dry wherever possible, but they are unlikely to go looking for what amounts to a needle in a haystack.

That said...given the bitter and vindictive nature that dominates this region....it's not unheard of for neighbors to 'rat out' the guy down the block who's had out-of-state plates on his vehicle for the past 6 months.

I've always gotten a notice of renewal with the option to go online and pay. What you do not get anymore is a sticker or piece of paper to carry around. I just keep the notice and proof of payment in my car documents just to be safe.

Same for emissions and DL. If OP moved and did not notify DMV of change of address then it's not their fault. Same if they threw it away or forgot about it.

Also my glove box is clean and tidy with only the necessary items; car docs, matches, tissues, napkins, wipes, mini first aid kit, multi screwdriver, flashlight, camera (old school), paper, pen, bottle/wine opener.

As for out of state plates, I know many who do this and it's annoying beyond belief. One example is a couple who owns a condo in FL and registers their cars there. But their vehicles have ever been outside of the tri state.

They sent me a letter a few months before mine was up....... I simply paid it and that was that. No hassle.

Unbeknownst to me I had my registration suspended because the DMV thought my insurance had lapsed. I had a cop behind me for quite a while so I figured he was running my plates but he never pulled me over so he turned one way and I went down my street. I heard a knock on my door later and it turned out to be the cop who was behind me. He said he ran my plates while he was behind me and learned of my registration being suspended but decided not to pull me over because he had some city official in his cruiser with him. I was grateful as this would have been very embarrassing and he'd have to tow my car and give me a fine. I thought he was kidding as I'd never received a notice from the DMV about my registration being suspended. I walked out to his cruiser with him and he showed me on his computer. Wowza. He said if he'd pulled me over I would have been towed and fined and all of that. I thanked the officer profusely and he went on his way. I called the police department and had them run my plates to verify my registration was indeed suspended and yes it was. I took the next 2 days off from work, called the DMV, overnighted them the form and the rush fee and got this taken care of ASAP.

I didn't always have the highest opinion of cops but after this I was grateful to these guys because by this cop's good deed he saved me a lot of expense and inconvenience.

If your neighbor evades property taxes, then you pay a higher rate on your property. I don't think it's bitter and vindictive to expect your neighbor to pay his fair share.
