My family is looking into moving to New Canaan, CT and I was wondering if this area is snooty or snobby. I'm not really sure if this area would be a good area to raise children in, if it is.

Thank you!

It has a very snobby/snooty reputation. I hear that they they they are better than everyone else bc they live in NC and everyone else isn't good bc their parents don't make as much $ as theirs.

The town was the setting of the Stepford wives. It is a very wealthy community. The area is said to be very similiar to Orange County,CA.

Of course, New Canaan is upscale, but the quality of life is outstanding and the schools are great. I lived in Greenwich for a few years and although we were never rich, I still have to see a high school like Greenwich High or New Canaan High. I would also recommend Westport or Old Greenwich, great suburbs, incredibly expensive, but the quality of life is second to none

Default Yes

Very snooty and rude for the most part..of course there are exceptions to every rule. Basically like every rich suburb you have ever been to except New Canaan people are at the very top of the food chain and they will let you know it.

Besides having lots of money, what makes them "snooty"? What experiences have you had in these places to call the majority of the people "snooty"?

New Canaan is a wonderful town; it has great restaurants and shopping, it's clean and safe and it's located just close enough to NYC so that you can commute comfortably. Great place to raise kids!

One note. It will cost you over $1M to buy a medium sized home so be prepared for the sticker shock.

Default Take it from a kid who grew up there

I grew up in new canaan, and I have to tell you the truth. NCHS is an amazing highschool, your kids will be well educated and well rounded. However, the pressure and competition that goes on in the town of New Canaan is likely to crack any child (or adult).

Kids (for the most part) study hard because of the insanley competitive atmosphere, but party even harder. It is not uncommon, or more accurately it is common, for kids to develop some sort of addiction or disorder becasue of the constant drive to be perfect.

As for being snooty, I don't think it is particularly snooty at the surface level, people are generally nice and accepting to your face. If your kids are older they will have a hard time making friends as most clicks form early on in the NC school system. You don't have to take my word for it, but unless you have alot of money, and I mean ALOT, you will probably feel inferior alot of the time.

Don't get me wrong, it is a beautiful and extremely safe town, I just think you deserve to know what I wish my parents knew before they moved me there.
