I have absolutely had it with seeing other people in my apartment complex living here in Connecticut with their license plates from Florida, New York or Pennsylvania. It is illegal and the state is losing revenue from this heinous crime. Fortunately, I have discovered that the CT DMV has an investigation unit in which you can report those who are not complying with this law, and they will be fined $1,000 for failure to get a CT license and failure to register the vehicle in CT.

DMV: Investigation Unit

I am planning to walk around my apartment complex parking lot at night and start writing down the addresses and license plate numbers of each and every resident who is not in compliance with this law. I mean, the state needs more revenues to provide welfare benefits to those who are residing in inner-cities, among other things. I want to do my part.

Has anyone ever done this before? I think I would have no problem getting the addresses and license plate numbers of my neighbors, but the hard part is the names. I don't know their names. Is there any way I can obtain this information without confronting them? Or maybe the DMV investigation unit will accept just the address and license plate?

Nothing irritates me more than tax avoidance. These are the same damn people who are disgusted with welfare recipients, yet they're not paying taxes THEMSELVES. Wtf?!

Thanks

I'm with you. There are lots of people who don't reside in other states yet use their relatives address for vehicle registration. They should be arrested and prosecuted for tax fraud. That being said, be careful reporting people. Lots of students are living here, as well as temporary residents who are here short term for work. I wouldn't report them unless it's someone you know personally and are familiar with their situation.

There are lots of people on these boards who disagree with us, and feel because they don't like the tax, people should be allowed to break the law. This entitled population will most definitely come out in full force here.

Why? So people can illegally get away with not paying their share while the rest of us foot the bill? Seems legit.

What does that matter though? College students are not exempt from registering their vehicle with the state. It is state law that you must notify the DMV within 48 hours of moving into CT, regardless of student status.

Tax avoidance and tax fraud is everyone's business. It is disingenuous to the rest of the honest taxpayers in CT. The state DMV encourages people to report those with out of state license plates to the state. I will be writing a letter and sending it to the DMV headquarters in Wethersfield later this week, once I write down each person's address and license plate number.

The answer isn't perfectly clear on this front. College is a temporary address, by law it is not necessary viewed as a "move". What if the vehicle is not the students (e.g., the parents) as is very, very often the case?

I'm still waiting for you to voluntary pay higher taxes, which is legally permitted at both the state and federal level. Make an impact Nep!
