I agree with you. The character of these towns and the beach would make facing a little more traffic worth it IMHO. Jay

In the summer evenings, or Thursday/Friday year round, getting anywhere past East Haven (more specifically, past exit 54) from New Haven is very difficult. Speaking from experience.
I agree that Woodbridge is a nice town and should be considered by the OP. I am not sure I agree about Seymour though. Though a nice enough town, I think there are better options. I will say I am surprised at your recommendation since I remember you living in Branford several years ago and loving it. Don't you think the charm and shorefront community is worth a small amount of additional traffic? I do. Jay

I only agreed with the Seymour recommendation because the OP did not specify exactly what they were looking for. My recommendation was purely from a commuting standpoint. That being said, Seymour is a quirky little town and I wouldn't steer anyone away from it unless they wanted top notch schools and/or beach access. In comparison to adjacent Fairfield County/NH area towns, Seymour is probably the best bang for your buck in greater western CT (Shelton, too).

As for the shoreline, yes I would move back there in a second! I miss it more every day that I'm away from it. I don't know that I would want to commute daily from Madison to New Haven. It's easy mileage wise but the gridlock past Branford in the summer and on Fridays is really awful. At least if you're commuting to Branford you can hop off and take back roads.

A Guilford backroad commute is not bad either.

It's not as easy as you might think. The east/west main roads in Branford become very congested when 95 is jammed. It's really only easy if you live in Branford and are able to travel a north/south route away from the highway to the coast or inland toward North Branford. Any of the routes toward Guilford will take you forever.
