Hello all. My family is looking into relocating to Stamford due to a job in NYC. We looked into a few NJ towns but Stamford seems more appealing. We have been looking at listings in 06902, 06906, 06905, and 06907.

What we need the most is space and proximity to the train. We are moving my mother in with us, so there needs to be an in-law suite or space to put one in. We also need a garage/workshop for my husband's woodworking. Our budget is $350 - 450K depending on how much we would need to renovate.

My husband and I in our late 30s with no kids (and no plans for any). We are into art, rock music, cooking, and good beer. We're don't care if there are cookie cutter suburbs or big box stores as long as it's safe and not near the smelly sewage plant I read about. The beach being nearby would be a plus.

Which neighborhood would be a good fit?

I grew up in Stamford. I would look in the mid-ridges (off Long Ridge and High Ridge), the area from Bull's Head to the Parkway. There are a lot of neighborhoods with raised ranches and you an make an apartment or living area for you mom on the first floor. The mid-ridges are also very safe. The houses there will most likely be at the top of your budget though.

That budget is tough for Stamford. Maybe look at Springdale (has its own train station) and Shippan (is near the main train station, and you can bypass the awful downtown traffic).

North Stamford is out of your budget most likely, and a bit of a drive to train.

Thanks! I'll check out Springdale for sure. I have a few saved listings in Shippan but have read mixed reviews of the area. I hadn't heard of the Ridges at all so I'll take a look at that too.

Shippan is fine. It is safe, affordable, mostly older homes. Pretty dense. Very convenient to train. There is really nothing "wrong" with it.

Shippan isn't realistic at your budget($350-450K). The Cove would be more realistic, but i personally don't care for that neighborhood. On the whole, i'm not a fan of the zip code(06902) in which these 2 neighborhoods lie. YMMV.

I would concentrate on 06907(Springdale) and 06905(Ridgeway). There aren't any "sketchy" streets within those zip codes. 06906(Glenbrook) would be realistic for your budget and it's safe overall, but there are a handful of streets that are kind of lackluster. 06903(North Stamford) is great, but like Shippan, it isn't realistic at your price point.

Zip code 06902 covers a huge area (as do many zip codes in Stamford) and is probably the zip code with the greatest variety of neighborhoods. The vast majority of the zip code is perfectly fine, but its better to go by the names of neighborhoods than by zip codes.

Most convenient to train station is 06901.

Have a good day, everyone.

No, it isn't, actually.

And besides, finding a Single-Family house in 06901 would be like finding a needle in a haystack.
