I've done the "commute" (i.e. I dropped material off from our job to a testing center) of Milford to Storrs (actually Eagleville) during the day and I can tell you it is NOT a fun commute. Either way you slice it you will hit traffic in New Haven, Hartford and bottleecks during the summer months on I95 (which you might not have to worry about if you are a Professor) are brutal. Not a commute worth doing.

I agree with all of these posters. A hard choice will have to be made either way at this point. (This is why I did early decision in college )

One more thing I'd like to add is that higher ed is super competitive so if you have a "wonderful opportunity" then I would jump on that.

As Jay said, it's worth seeing if he would consider a change. If there is any way that he can get a job in Hartford/Manchester/Norwich, or anything in that range would be ideal if his field is flexible enough to make the move. Then find a place in Vernon or Coventry for a compromise. The big thing is NOT driving through Hartford as a part of a normal commute. It's terrible in almost every direction. You could try back-roads to avoid the stop-and-go but then the commute will be longer anyway.

If he can't get Hartford, then Providence isn't bad if you find a good mid-point. Eastern CT isn't as dense with traffic and you could get an affordable place in Windham county around Rt. 6, which I'm sure you know very well. North Windham has some pretty areas. Especially if it's only a few days a week to the city, that wouldn't be bad for either of you.

This is all presuming he needs city access and that you don't mind moving away from the Big Apple. None of us know his industry so to go further without details would be more shots in the dark. Good luck with your decision though and congrats on the offer!

I think with all your helpful advice, Milford is probably off the table. I am hoping to rent a room in Storrs during the week and spend my weekends and breaks in Brooklyn. If that does not work, we might just decamp for Hartford...it's near Amtrak, my family and it's not too far from Storrs, but there are still museums and a few bars and spots to eat.

Nothing is set in stone, I think, except for not trying the dual commute out of the Milford area. Sounds like a nightmare!

Amtrak from Hartford is a long ride, and very very expensive. It is not cheap like Metro North.

I recently moved from Brooklyn, NY to CT also for a position at UConn. I chose Glastonbury because it's really nice and has the most amenities, but can tell you that driving to and from UConn every day is exhausting and it's less than Milford. There are stations in Hartford where your partner can commute from (even if it is a couple of hours at least they aren't driving and it's not every day). You can look in West Hartford which puts you about 45m from Storrs but you will deal with some regular traffic if you work during rush hour times. Glastonbury is about 15-20 mins from Hartford and about 45m from the New Haven & New London stations (maybe a bit less). Gbury puts you about 36-40m from Storrs and there are a few rentals here (I"m living in one now). Good luck and congrats on your new position. If you have specific questions feel free to message me.

Train service from Hartford to New York is not geared toward regular daily commuters. It is Amtrak and is more of a business/leisure travel service. There may be buses but even that is not that great of an option. Jay

I think the op said their partner would be going into the city a couple of days not daily and that they were the one commuting daily.

Yeah but even a couple of days a week is tough and expensive. They need to look at the cost and schedule to see if the train service fits into their time and budget. Jay
