After work I have been going to Branford to help a family member. It has been taking me 30 minutes JUST to get through downtown New Haven at 4 PM. I know there is construction and all but WOW. It came to a complete stop on 34 at Dwight street and took me 20 minutes to get to York St then another 10-15 minutes to get on the on ramp to 95. From there it took another 10 or so minutes to get ON 95. That's about 45 minutes to go about a mile.

One thing I noticed is they reduced 34 from 3 to 2 lanes. It's causing mayhem. When will this be done? I'll be going to Branford every day from Orange at this time until the fall.

Sorry I just needed to vent, but if anyone knows when this construction will be done, please let me know!!!

Take Elm Street straight across to Olive, then scoot down to Wooster Street and get on the ramp at the end that plops you right on to the Q Bridge.

That's the secret, magical path that I've been taking for years. I've hit the lights and gotten from Dixwell/Dwight to on the Q Bridge in less than five minutes during rush hour.

Dowtown new haven is like a mini nyc. Traffic/non stop construction. The condensed core isn't really designed to handle all the cars. IT'S FASTER TO WALK.

You're right on that!!!! It's ridiculous….and they seem to be making it worse. Instead of making it easier for traffic to pass through NH, they are making it more difficult…

I have yet to see how this mess of a situation in downtown New Haven will help ease traffic flow through the region. The route you take (34 <----> 91/95) is a regular route for many, many commuters. This was completely ignored by traffic engineers and city planners, IMO. Not good.

The construction in Downtown and the Medical District relates to the city's Route 34/Downtown Crossing project which removes the last 1/2 mile or so of the Route 34 Expressway. The city is removing the expressway in an effort to join together the Downtown and Medical Districts and free up land for new development. 100 College Street is one of those developments. There will be more under the next phases of the project including redevelopment of the adjacent New Haven Coliseum site. For information on this, checkout the Route 34/Downtown Crossing website below. Jay

My wife is due any day now and we will be coming in from southington area to Yale New Haven York street entrance. Will we run into the construction? I am not familiar with the area much at all. We would be taking exit one off 91 onto north frontage, onto college, congress, cedar, then onto York. Is that a good way or would we hit construction? Is there a better way to go?

As mentioned, there are many alternate routes that are less frustrating. I like the Elm to State Street route, gets you to 95 by the police station. Where are you coming from?

@Eightfour - try the Trumbull Ave exit on 91. Take Trumbull to College Street, and College Street direct to the hospital area. That's a pretty quick route during rush hour.

Outside afternoon rush hour you might as well just take the 34 exit from 91.
