CORRECTION: Chavez has repeatedly said he has no problem with the American people. His gripe is with Bush. If he did have a problem with Americans, Joe Kennedy wouldn't have been given any assistance with the home heating oil program this past winter.

Yes I know it is closer to your price quote- in some instances 150 gallons in really cold weather will last some folks not even a month 700 bucks to heat a house in month ouch.

It will be interesting to see what home oil companies offer in the way of lock-in rates. Just yesterday, it was reported that Cady Oil of Colchester has closed its doors. Though it might not seem like it, many companies miscalculated the increases they would incur when locking in rates for customers.

Our house is 1600 sq. feet, and we have new insulated windows, and a new energy-efficient boiler. During the winter we keep the thermostat around 60-62 during the days, and 58 or even lower at night. Last winter we bought around 100-125 gallons of oil per month in the coldest months, around 3.50 a gallon. (we didn't lock in a rate, which we should have, however the previous year we had locked in a rate that turned out to be much higher than the market cost) Our water is heated by our oil boiler, and last week I bought another 100 gallons of oil at 4.41 per gallon. I honestly don't know how we are going to afford this winter.

Suddenly row houses with shared inside walls seem to make sense. I think that many years ago, houses were built to best deal with the climate they were in: high ceilings in New Orleans to keep the hot air above people's heads, very sloped roofs in Vermont to keep the snow off the roof, rowhouses in Chicago to preserve heat, etc. Then we saw builders build new houses that seemed to ignore all that--large houses with open floorplans and cathedral ceilings, whether they were in the Northeast, South, West or wherever. I am constantly told "it is what people want." Things I things I think about when considering a house include how hard will it be to heat it in the winter and how hard will it be to cool it in the summer--not how pretty it looks.
