Check average vehicles per day in I-91 Vermont vs hartford. More trucks = more potholes/wear and tear on pavement. You can't compare the two states.

For local pot holes contact your towns customer service. They don't drive on every road so they need us to let them know. They are quick to come out and fix. At least that's from my experience in Wilton, Norwalk, and Milford. Doesn't hurt to contact them. I do it via email with a picture. They usually get it done within 2 days.

Cold Patches are better but some holes are too big for it.

I go to New Hampshire a couple of times a year and their roads are great, both interstate and state routes. New Hampshire has no state income tax, no sales tax and gets no federal funds for roads since they do not have seat belt laws. Yet their roads are great. What is their secret? They don't even have casinos giving a cut of their take to the state. Amazing!

I think NH does a better job of making sure that money meant for highway and road repairs goes for those purposes and is not diverted to other purposes.

I could be wrong but I believe the state does receive federal funding for highway repairs and maintenance though. If I remember correctly, about 25% of the roads budget comes from federal funds.

You could be right, but I recall years back, when they would not require seat belts, or helmets for motorcyclists, the news article noted they would not be eligible for federal road funds. I guess a New Hampshire resident would be more knowledgable on this than I am. But their roads are in very good repair.

91 in Springfield is a mess. It is also horrible up past Greenfield. There is one dip in the road there that borders on causing you to lose control. Jay

I mentioned this before, but MASS DOT is undertaking a huge project to replace the i-91 viaduct in Springfield. They are starting next month (May) I think. This may be why they haven't made any repairs recently.

Although I think that area of i-91 has been in shambles for the last 5 years.

There is no secret to potholes and broken pavement. Traffic and higher volume will quickly wear down any road or highway. Anytime a vehicle moves over pavement the tires are slowly tearing away at the surface as they grip for traction. NH & VT can get some heavy tourist season traffic but it isn't the 5 days a week & twice a day rush hour traffic that stretches of I-91 near Hartford or Springfield face.

Thumbs up Thanks for the info

For a lot of reasons, I have been planning my spring trip to New Hampshire for late April, rather than May. Since a major I91 project is planned for May, I will definitely go this month. The interstate is a disaster around Springfield, and I don't know my way around there well enough to get off 91 to go around it. I do get off around Hatfield since I like US 5 and take that all the way to Brattleboro. I like the semi-rural scenery along that road.

You can take Route 5 north even in CT
