Hello All,

We relocated to milford, CT from stamford.

We have a 4 bedroom cape cod and we dont use the second floor often. As of now, We have window units. I am thinking of getting central air installed but a friend suggested to look in to ductless mini splits. I understood that the initial investment is higher for ductless mini splits. Please note that We already have duct work as we have forced air heating. Will it be wise to install zoned central air or ductless mini splits considering we only use half the house all the time and also utility bills for central air are lot higher?

Also, can you please share any recommendations for HVAC guys around milford, CT? It would be very helpful if you can share the cost (If someone recently did the same work).

Thank you and Appreciate all suggestions.

I am not a fan of ductless AC. I don't think it does as good of a job as the ducted units and the units seem to be intrusive hanging on the wall. A ducted unit is almost invisible. They even now have high-velocity mini-duct systems which help make it easier to install in existing homes. A good AC guy can help you make the right decision for you. My family has used Edgerton in Monroe and been happy. I know others here will have suggestions too. Jay

Thank you Jay. I am also not a big fan of protruding ductless units. I also saw in other post(2013 post) that you mentioned the ductless wont dehumidify. So, that's makes it easier and probably we will end up with central air. I am curious if any other forum member might shed some light on installation costs also.

You might try searching or posting this question on the House forum. There is a lot of good information there and a lot of people who know about these things. Jay

If you already have a Forced Hot Air System, the Central Air would probably be the most affordable, and easiest way to go.....only problem is that A/C Ducts should be high, where Heating Ducts are closer to the floor, but should work regardless

Thank you. Actually out heating vents are close to
Floor. Do you think we need additional ductwork if we go with central air?

My builder (I trust him implicitly) likes Comfortable Environments in Milford.

Too costly in my opinion to make it worthwhile.

Couple of HVAC guys came to give me estimates over the weekend. Both of them told me that the ducts are very small (4" wide) and It is better to go with ductless over central air for more efficiency.

I am still debating if I can live with ductless. They say that the new ductless split also comes with a dehumidifier.
