We are married couple in 30's, both moving for work from Boston. I will be working in Woonsocket RI with CVS and my wife will be working in Meriden CT. I understand it is hell of a commute. But need some advise where should we live so that she is in 40-50 min commute and the least possible for me. After looking at some options, we have narrowed down to Vernon, CT till now.

My understanding is there not much of a public transport which will work in my case.

Your advise is highly appreciated.

Roopma,
I can tell you that your wife's commute shouldn't be a big deal (I commute from S. Windsor to Meriden and it takes me about 35-40 minutes depending on traffic) but I think your commute is way too long. You're talking 75 minutes or so and that's taking 84 to the Mass Pike and then taking 146, so that's a boatload of driving. That will not be any kind of fun in the winter.

That being said, if both you and your wife are locked into your two jobs then you may not have any better options in the short term. Are either of your jobs the kind where either one of you might be able to work a day or two per week from home?

Default Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I will be working from home from Friday. So which place you recommended considering we are locked in to our jobs?

What is your budget? East Lyme is right on 95, so you can shoot up 95 to 295 in RI and then to Woonsocket.

Her commute to Meriden will probably be closer to 50 minutes to an hour, though. She'll have an easy drive down 95 South to Guilford, then would take back roads through Guilford and North Haven to Meriden. That's abotu 75-80 minutes for you, though.

If you want to shorten her commute, you could try Old Saybrook, Westbrook or Clinton and stay on the 95 corridor for your ease of commute. Of course, Old Saybrook adds 10 minutes to your commute, Westbrook 15 and Clinton 20.

Wasn't there once a man from Woonsocket?

Seriously, if you are into pharmacies, try Willimantic. All sorts of drugs you can't get at your local CVS.

It's an insane commute. Someone needs to find a new job.

That's 1 hour 25 minute drive with NO TRAFFIC and perfect weather. If he's driving that at rush hour he'll hit the rush heading into around providence which will add even more time to that commute. Johnston area on 295 usually has a bit of a backup as well as 95 in warwick. Add snow and you're talking a potential 3 hour commute each way. It's not realistic.

not all that different than the commute from Vernon, and 95 in the winter will usually have less snow than 91 and 84

As soon as you get to RI 95 starts heading north and they get a lot of snow like vernon. I agree, they are both bad options! lol

This is a tough commute for both of you. The problem is there is no easy direct route between Meriden and Woonsocket. I was thinking that you may want to consider somewhere further south than Vernon. Maybe Norwich. Your wife would be under an hour from her job and you would be about an hour. I think that is a little better for you than Vernon. Jay
