Yea, that'd be great, but then there needs to be more train coverage and frequency and possibly more affordable fare such that people would be more willing to use it for a variety of non-commute purposes.

There is supposedly slots opening in Penn Station for Metro-North (via the Hell Gate Bridge) once LIRR shifts some of its traffic to the new deep underground terminal in Grand Central, but I'm not sure how much frequency can actually go up since it's unclear to me where and what capacity constraints are there.

Today is a crucial day for Governor Lamont’s plan to use truck tolls to fund transportation improvements. Democrats will be doing a hard count of votes to determine if it would possibly pass. Interesting to see what happens. Jay

Connecticut is the only state I can think of where tolls are an issue. It's basically the only way freeways are being constructed in North Carolina and voters regularly approve taxing themselves here for rail transit improvements (that have paid off well in Charlotte).

Because those tolls are being added to the NEW freeways, not to existing freeways, unless it is a dedicated toll facility (i.e an HOT lane) with a toll free alternative alongside. Lamont’s plans offer no such toll free alternative unless you leave the highway altogether. Couple that with the fact NC’s gas taxes are lower, they don’t have an annual property tax on vehicles, and the overall lower cost of living, and you’ll understand why people complain.

There were- and still are- residents complaining and protesting about tolls in N.C. It’s widely accepted there that the sh*t show I-77 toll road and voter anger over it was a major factor in McCrory losing the governor’s race in 2016 and it’s still an issue in the 2020 race.

Why not just use the already in place weighing stations as a way to toll trucks?

The weigh stations are not always open. Additionally requiring all trucks to stop to pay a toll slows down freight and increases costs
