I start EVERYTHING from seeds. I do not buy any plant you see in my pictures. Except flowers. But this year is the first year I started flowers from seeds. We'll see how that goes. I already destroyed a few. lol

The herbs I simply start in pots OR if starting inside like I did the Basil and Spearmint I start in small cups or little pots.

This was from end of June 2016. Was such a wet period, Herbs hate being soggy.

This was from Mid June 2015

Nice pictures, nice work.

I think my beet seeds must have rotted. Or it's because I couldn't get out to get potting soil and so I just dug some regular soil and put it on top of the "soil" that you buy in bags. I don't think anything would germinate in that fake soil, it has so much vermiculite in it, so porous, so I did the best I could

I find container gardening to be challenging and not very much fun either. I'm using an Earth Box and filled it up with that fake soil so that the beets would have room to grow. Looks like only two of them even came up and I just dug down and there are absolutely no seeds waiting to come up. Must have just rotted in the cold and wet. Never had any trouble starting seeds before. Since I don't know what to do, I guess I'll have to go to a plant place and buy some actual potting soil, scrape off the real soil that I used as a top layer, and plant new beet seeds.

And just like that... With a little rain and a warm night, soil temps are now warmer than last year on this day (red line) and close to 2018 (white).

Tomorrow morning we should have the warmest soil to date for this year and it will be transplant day!

Lots to transplant.

No sun scold at all. That's because I didn't rush the process. Even shade when first bringing them out can burn them. Different kind of light outside vs inside.

I started bringing them outside on May 1st then back inside after just 30 minutes. Long process but now they are ready to stay outside all day/night.

First Pepper to show. Banana Pepper.

Planted Cucumbers yesterday. I have to string up the trellis now.

My compost pile. I don't smell the horse manure anymore. lol. I need more. Leaves are breaking down but slowly. Need heat and sun

ok... I JUST HAD MY FIRST HUMMINGBIRD!! Just now as I sat in my chair looking at the reddish petunias on the balcony railing and wondering why I didn't get a hummingbird. Suddenly, as if by ESP, this teeny wittle bird with invisibly fluttering wings was there, beak poked into the petunias!

BTW, He could have cared less about the hummingbird feeder that hung next to it. I'll get my phone in case he comes back and get a picture but he must have been about four feet from my head! Couldn't have been his first trip, too much of a coincidence.

Busy Day yesterday...
May 16, 2020.

FINALLY the soil temp went above 60°F. I was at 65° yesterday morning.

It's Party Time! 68 Hot Peppers. 15 Different types.

Jalapeno
Cayenne
Pusa Juwala
Orange TeaPot
Dragons Spawn
Dr Martin Carrot Red
Chinese 5 Color
Shi****o Sweet
Banana
Red Marconi
Serrano Purple
Naga Joloki
AJI Rainforest
Jimmy Nardello
Anaheim

A look at the root ball. It was definitely time. Mid May is always the safe point for us here in CT.
I started the seeds end of February. Think about this...

This plant is 2 months of growth. If I started the seeds outside in Mid May, this will be the size of the plant Mid July.
Then we would only have 2 more months of growing season.

So we definitely need the head start in Connecticut

BTW - I retrung my cucumber trellis.

For those that don't know. I drove a 4 foot rebar 2 feet into the soil for the posts. I slipped a 1/2" EMT pipe over the rebar then used a corner piece to add the top cross bar with 1/2" emt. They are about 6 feet tall. you can make it any height you want.

Hurricanes can't take this down. And if the string is tight and strong enough you can grow pumpkins on this.

Eggplants are in! Wish me luck. never have luck with them in the ground. Maybe the Pots will be different.

12 Tomatoes are in.

Not going to see growth like this. Soil temp back down to mid 50s. Cold for this time of year.
Previous 2 yrs on this day was 65.2° & 61.3°. As easy as it goes down, it can go up but note it's been hard staying in the 60s.

May 30, 2018 the soil was almost at 70°

I believe this is the 4 o clock flower? I planted flower seeds for first time and I forgot to put labels everywhere. They are all scattered about in pots and ground.

Picking lettuce everyday but already the Arugula starting to bolt (don't like heat!)

If you guys never tasted fresh grown lettuce, you have no idea what you are missing. WOW. Just WOW. Nothing at all like what you pick in stores. Or even farmers market. Eating it right from the backyard harvest that day is something special. Taste is incredible.

Onions doing good. They need more heat!
