Why would anyone go to Providence?

Have you guys ever been to Hartford?
Yeah I live in Hartford but the nice part of Hartford. That area has improved A LOT over the past couple decades. I remember that area was home to many parking lots for Phoenix Muthal and Travelers.

Hartford has gotten better. But it still seems outclassed. I will admit since I left a job in Hartford 6 years ago I have only been to the hospitals and the convention center. So really I'm a little out of touch. I'm sure Front st has helped but it still needs more.

I don't know, to see how a sister New England city managed to create a vibrant atmosphere?

I have visited over 40 of the state capitals in America. I do it on business. That would include all the New England capitals except Rhode Island's. There has never been a need to go to Providence. I'm sure it's nice but from a business/corporate perspective, there's not much there. I drove through. Seemed nice enough but nothing special.

I have been to Providence many times and really do not see its charm. I would not call it a vibrant city. It is at times but not regularly. Heck its tallest building is an spooky looking empty hulk that they can't give away. The mall is nice but it is losing tenants and an anchor and is kind of isolated from the central city. They do the show on the river which is interesting but only once or twice. Maybe it is just me. Jay

Providence is Boston satellite city like Stamford to NYC

I spent a lot of time in Providence over the past 3 years, and I would definitely say it has a vibe and identity all on its own.

This is how many suburbanites currently view Hartford. And comparatively speaking, of the times that I've been there, it feels like there's a lot more going on in Providence than there is in Hartford. Granted, it's been about 2 years since I've been there, but IMO you're going to have an easier to trying to lure people into Providence than you will into Hartford. What I noticed that Providence has that Hartford seems to be lacking is a pedestrian friendly feel and curb appeal. You see a smattering of this in Hartford on a couple of streets, but there seems to be more of it in Providence.

I also feel that Providence has been more successful as being a cultural and artistic center. Maybe this is because it's located in a geographically smaller state, and this is the one city serves as the epicenter for this (although Newport fits this bill to a degree), but in Connecticut, Hartford has other cities to contend with: IMO New Haven and Stamford really have done a better job of providing nightlife and culture and this is an area where it seems Hartford is lacking in comparison. Some of these things (like movie screenings in the parks) were axed by Mayor Bronin due to budget cutbacks. Also the bordering suburbs have become popular draws for what they offer, and this is where people choose to go, so this also presents a challenge. There's also a question worth asking: Is the city a place people are enthusiastic about being in? Because I don't feel people feel a sense of enthusiasm about being in our capitol city, and I think this is preventing people from attending events here, or even learning about what events may be held here.

Providence isn't really analagous to Stamford. Stamford is the most important suburban business center in the NYC metro and is basically 100% aligned with NYC's economic base (ie finance). There's a huge amount of commuting/cross-pollination between the two.

Providence isn't even typically considered part of the Boston metro, and no one really considers it as a business extension of Boston. Too far/inconvenient, and Boston suburban wealth heads westward from the city, not southward (in contrast, NYC wealth heads northward into CT).

Maybe it's sorta similar to New Haven's relationship to NYC, but even that would be a stretch, IMO. New Haven is far more connected to NYC than Providence is to Boston.

I would say Providence is most similar to Hartford. Independent city/metro but with some influence from nearby bigger metros.
