How warm do you want it?? This isn't the south!

And even not using December which was historically warm

Jan 1 to Feb 9 is 11th warmest on record for Bridgeport, 15th warmest for BDL!

Feb so far is 7th warmest for BDR, 5th warmest for BDL!

So this winter has been WARM compared to normal.

I didn't know which station to use so I used Meriden. You can find the others here.

Here are the Max & Min temps for January & February. I mean WTF. Complaining about an area where max temps get into the 40s where snow is able to melt? 50s and 60s in February?

Last winter I will give it, that's a winter to complain about if you don't like winter.

I think our average temp this winter so far is similar to what the Mid Atlantic Normal is.. like Washington DC.
I think a lot of the perception is the recent snows....until the blizzard i thought it was a mild winter too..now i dont think its a brutal one but having a lot of even small snows at once changes the perspective.

By the way its possible all of CT goes below zero (temp, not wind chill) for lows sat nite/sun morn as NWS is even giving NYC an outside shot of it now (which would be its first since 1994 and first in feb since 1963!)

It could be 238 kelvins with the wind chill Saturday!

A look at the record coldest air mass aloft for all of Winter and month of February.. Will we break it this weekend?

For those not sure: The 850mb level (4500 feet above our heads) is important. It controls the air masses and the overall temps at the surface.

I can just sense it now 7Wishes is looking up the surface temps for around these dates. lol

This is what the GFS has.

Bottom line.. Near or Record cold at the surface.... but don't worry... In ... & Out. Wont last long.

WOAH. Is that before wind chill is factored in?

Not sure if you saw, but they are listed in Celsius (and 4500 ft above our heads )which makes it a bit scarier at first glance. But it is still damned cold! With wind chill I believe we are looking at negative 20's fahrenheit.

Actually at -40 F and C are the same temp so at -30s they are close!

I can see how my "controls the surface Temps" comment can get mistaken. Sorry. Control meaning more cold and warm rather than exacts. Other stuff like sun, clouds, land, ocean, radiational cooling, wind, ect has effect on surface temps too.

But yeah, if that level above is that cold than you can be sure the surface is gonna be frigid. And just think about any wind that pushes down from 4000 feet to the surface is gonna mix down some crazy cold.

Similar to opening your freezer and blowing into it. If there was no back to the freezer the air would push across. Brrr.

I always find it funny how temps are measured in C above the surface but U.S measures in F at the surface. I kinda got used to that. Still need a conversion link for exacts.

Interesting about -40C/F

Interestingly, those dates are not the all time record lows for those stations so I guess 850mb temp and ground level temp don't always perfectly correlate.

So yeah, I looked them up, here's the low temps for those stations:

NYC (I used Central Park) - 12/31/62 the low was 28 which I think may even be a degree or 2 ABOVE normal!
2/15/58 - low of 29 (also slightly above normal)

AFTER SEEING THE BELOW RESULTS I THINK THEY MIGHT BE WRONG ABOUT THE NYC DATES FOR RECORD LOW 850 MB TEMPS

Boston - 1/16/04 low of -7 (a record for the date and this Saturday will probably be the coldest there since then, I don't believe this is the coldest in the 1948 to now period but I'm not sure)
2/13/96 - low of 5

Portland, ME (Gray)
1/16/04 - low of -9
2/13/96 - low of -4

Caribou, ME
1/18/82 - low of -27 (was record for date until 2009 with low of -30)
2/21/66 - low of -22 (was record for date until 1993 with low of -28)

Albany, NY
1/4/81 - low of -12
1/18/82 - low of -10
2/21/68 - low of -1

Buffalo, NY
1/17/82 - low of -16 (record for date)
2/20/15 - low of -8

Pittsburgh
1/17/82 - Low of -18 (record for date, this was the closest of the data to all time record low, which is -22 on Jan 19, 1994)
2/1/71 - low of -4 (record for date)

Washington, DC (I used Reagan Airport)
1/17/82 - low of -5 (record for date, not the all-time record low, that occurred in 1899 but it is the all time low since 1948, the period of record)
2/20/15 - low of 5 (record for date)
