It's a damn mess out there.

Was happy about a nice mild winter...

Some folks got more snow today then December-Jan combined. Stay safe. NWS Offices were right putting the words "caught off guard" in their messages. People weren't ready for this.

================

Looks like Hartford(BDL) is going to have the 2nd coldest April day in 111 years.
Only twice since 1905 had the temps stayed in the 20s during an April day. WOW

Even if they used the warmer "HFD" stat, still would be 2nd coldest. Only 4/7/1982 was colder. Rare Cold Day today. Also a record snow for todays date not April.

This storm appears to be very unpredicted. Snow last night about 2 inches stopped around 9 this morning. Rain came in around 12. By 1 sleet and snow off and on. Then by 3 snowing heavy. By 6 turning to light snow, but still coming down at a decent rate. Temp continues to float around 30 to 31 degrees. If colder the snow probably would of been a lot more.

Did all of CT DOT and town DPWs already take their plow blades off? Roads were atrocious in the Hartford area for the evening commute. I'm pretty sure Route 2 in East Hartfird was completely untreated (icy bumps abound). Town roads in the area were no better. A 30 minute commute took me 1:15 and I never once saw a plow or sand/salt truck.

Edited to add: Hartford area was all snow, all day.

I got home tonight and was beginning to make myself some dinner. I heard a monstrous CRACK --- CRASH!!!

I walk outside and see this. One of our trees lost a few limbs that were about 30 feet long and 4-6" thick.

It missed my house by about a foot. The limbs are encased in ice. I'm hoping we make it through the night with no more surprises.

Here's a video: https://youtu.be/x49AHa8piRo

...a little too close for comfort.

What a mess, drove around today and Wallingford was a slushy mess. After about 5 it got worse and accumulated to some snow on top. Unbelievable that it's April, such a joke.

Meanwhile...

While today's event was fascinating in terms of how cold & snowy it got for so late in the season, it started off harrowing. I left Hartford at 5:45am heading for the Boston area. Was already snowing moderately when I left, and I passed by 3 accidents on I-84 westbound including a semi that had gone over the barrier and was partly on its side. Rest of the way on 84 only one lane (the middle one) was driveable. Very disappointing, it's not like we didn't have the buildup for this event. Improved a bit as I got to the Mass Pike, then deteriorated again as I headed up I-495.

Ended up having to clear a good 6" off my car at the end of the day (north of Boston):
