Modern would be my strong recommendation. I think their pies are better, the service is better and you will likely have less of a wait.

Sally's is my favorite but slow. Modern is quite different from Sally's and Pepe's, but good and better service generally.

Da Legna and BAR are excellent as well. Each a little different but still amazing.

Good call. Da Legna might have usurped Modern for me. But still, being in last place in that game is still better than 99.99% of pizza nationwide.

National Geographic Travel magazine and the Daily Beast each just had travel write ups on New Haven pizza (this week).

I would like to try NH pizza in actual New haven for once. So far my only two experiences have both been Pepes -- Pepes in Fairfield and Pepes in Danbury. I like Danbury Pepes better, but still it's really not my favorite type of pizza. I know everyone raves about NH crust, and that's exactly my least favorite part of it. I was at the Danbury Pepes last weekend and made sure to take specific note of what I didn't like about it: and it's the charred on the outside but a little too doughy on the inside part that doesn't agree with me. Is Sally's crust different from Pepes, or is it basically the same texture?

If you don't like the char Lalally, just ask for a light bake. I do that at Modern and other places and they are happy to do it.

There are those who will likely disagree but I don't find any difference between the NH Pepe's and the other locations aside from the fact that I've had better (friendlier!) service at their locations outside of New Haven.

That aside, though Modern is my favorite of the Big 4 (Big 5 now with Da Legna?) you can't go wrong with any of them. I consider myself lucky to live in a veritable pizza Mecca!
