I came across this link (a welcome club that sponsors activities), but I have to admit I have not tried this myself:

One way to make friends once in Fairfield is take some classes with the continuing education dept.
Fairfield Public Schools® I took a class and I thought people were very friendly.
Your wife should check the YMCA, too.
