Not knowing your price point or other expectations, I'd start with Old Saybrook and East Lyme.

I'm from New London County. I just posted a comment that might help you, linked below. For New London the towns you'll want to look into are Ledyard, Waterford, and East Lyme. Ledyard is more semi-rural, all have decent schools. If you are looking for more rural try a bit up 395. Preston and Lisbon are fine towns that send their kids to Norwich Free Academy for high school.

New London is less than a 20 minute drive from a bunch of towns with good schools (New London is NOT one of those towns)

1) East Lyme has arguably the best schools in New London County (Niantic is a village within East Lyme, in case you are searching online)
2) Old Lyme is probably the next best school system, but the town is also pricier than East Lyme.

Other good school systems:
Stonington (Mystic is a village in Stonington) has a good school system and an outstanding musical theater program, if you have a child into that sort of thing. Mystic is divided between Stonington and Groton, though, so you'd prefer Stonington for the schools. Groton schools are decent as well, but not as good as Stonington.

Waterford has a good school system and Ledyard is also pretty good. Test-score wise, they're about the same as Stonington. North Stonington performs well on tests, too, but is also a very small school system. Salem is a pretty rural town north of Montville - it's got a lot of nice homes, though, and it shares a high school with East Lyme. T

Just outside the 20 minute radius are Old Saybrook, Essex, Deep River and East Haddam. All have good school systems as well (Essex, Deep River and Chester share a school system that performs well)

I agree with NewJeff. He lives in that area and knows it well. East Lyme schools do perform very well on the state's standardized tests. You can find information on schools in Connecticut at the website below. More information on the type of community you would like, your price range and what you expect for that price would help us help you better. Jay

Mystic is not a town. It is a section of the Towns of Groton and Stonington at the mouth of the Mystic River. It includes a charming village on both sides of a bridge and a number of well know tourist attractions (the aquarium and Mystic Village). Very nice to visit but traffic can be difficult in the summer tourist season. Jay

Thanks for all the information. Much appreciated. We are looking for our 1st home in the low 300,000. We would definitely like to be in a neighborhood as opposed to completely rural. A local cute downtown would be ideal. Not sure how your traffic patterns run towards New London. Would there be any town in between Hartford and New London. What would the commute be from say Glastonbury.

If you are looking for a town in between Hartford and New London and want it to be a "town" as opposed to rural then look at Colchester. That highway that goes halfway from Colchester to I95 might even be finished sometime before you die. Either way that's the best place for a commute sort of midway between Hartford and the Groton-New London area.

Glastonbury would be about 45 minutes away from New London but it's right near Hartford.
