Iam also thinking of moving from the Bronx to bethel. Looking for a better like for my children. They are still young and need to find good and safe school s for them. Also my brother lives there and it will be nice to live closer to him and his family. I work in the City as well and trying to see how long of a commute it will be and the best way to do it....any advise ?

Advice would be to find another town. It’s just not practical from Bethel.

What’s the longest commute you would tolerate and housing needs/budget? That will help find a more fitting town.

Bethel is over 60 miles from New York City. There are few options for commuting using mass transit. Service on the Danbury line is not direct into Manhattan. You could drive down to Norwalk or over to Southeast Station in Brewster NY. None of these would be easy commutes. Jay

Agree. It’s not practical from anywhere north/east of Norwalk.

I would say look in Fairfield. Fairfield is a nice safe town on the water with good schools and it has two Metro North stations. Lots of people commute from Fairfield to NYC/Grand Central. I live in Trumbull but I take the train out of Fairfield when I go into the city. While not an ideal commute it's not that bad. The average price for a house in Fairfield according to this site is about $500,000 but there are houses & condos in the east side of the town lower than that.

There is a 7:30 am train at 71 minutes from the Fairfield station. There are others about 75 to 80 minutes. The Fairfield Metro station (on the east side of town) ads about 5 minutes to the times above.

I am just curious where does your brother work? Have you asked him about Bethel to NYC/Grand Central?

Expect a 100-120 minute door to door commute from Fairfield. While likely easier than Bethel solely due to the train accessibility, it’s way worse than “not that bad”.

Depends on where in Manhattan. I don’t even have a 120 minute commute from Milford.

That depends on the person really for "not that bad". The OP said he works in lower Manhattan.

I went to the Pratt Institute in lower Manhattan in the 1990's 2 to 3 days a week. Pratt was on the corner of Houston & Lafayette. I took the train from Stamford (or sometimes Noroton) into Gran Central and then the subway to Pratt. That was a pretty good commute.

In the 2000's I went back to school again (2 to 3 days a week) to keep up with technology. This time I lived in Trumbull and took the train in Fairfield. It took me about 20 to 25 minutes to get to the train station and I live in the northern part of Trumbull. Trumbull to lower Manhattan for me was tolerable. If the OP lives on the eastern side of Fairfield in the Stratfield section he could take route 59 down to the Metro Station, take the 71 minute train and it would be "not that bad". That is my point of reference for "not that bad".

“Not that bad” to me would be under an hour. Considering a lower Manhattan commute from Fairfield will be close to 2, I stand by my opinion.

It would be an exhausting commute to do 5 days a week. People do do it, but quality of life suffers. If you eventually want to settle your family in Bethel (btw, very nice town) I would start investigating other employment options now. Westchester, Lower Fairfield County, Danbury if possible.
