That is correct. I am doing a lot of research on the tax relief of the different town. CT has a senior tax relief program but many towns have additional tax relief. One reason I am so interested in Madison is if your income is under a certain amount you can get 100% tax deferral if needed which is payed back by your heirs. They also give you an amount above the CT relief that does not need to be paid back. Guilford and Branford are also good but Madison is the best.

The people that Jay knows must live in a town that has a good senior program above the CT one. It is a matter of research when you start to narrow down the towns that you like.

Thanks Jay and CTartist for this information. I will be retiring in 2 years. I did pick up information on the 'Circuit Breaker' at Vernon Town Hall- they have three different programs for those disabled or 65 years old and older. If I was able to get my taxes reduced by half- that would be nice!

Grateful for this added information about the tax relief programs. I will also be looking into these as I search. It sounds like the state has programs as well as the individual towns. So worth looking for info on both.

I got new computer and I could not figure out where I had this bookmarked. This is an excellent guide to all the senior relief programs in the state.

Wow, this is great information. It really gives you an idea of the programs offered in each town and what their eligibility requirements are. I looked at the information for the town of the person I know and it seems to be what they get. The OP should note that most programs require at least one year of residency to qualify so they would not be eligible the first year they moved here. But after that they should be qualified and depending on the town will get some relief. Jay

It certainly is great information. That is why when people from Fairfield County say to me I can't stay in CT when I retire I say "hold on, I am going to send you something".

When you see the information on the senior tax relief all in a row by town you can start to see it is possible for some of us to stay here. You just have to choose wisely.
