What do you do for work that you are hoping to work for the city or state?

State of Connecticut employment is super-difficult to "get in". It took me over 3 years to get a job once I started pursuing state employment - many (I want to say most - but might be incorrect) positions require testing and being on a passed Exam List prior to applying, those exams are given very infrequently, like every 2 or so years in a revolving/as needed pattern. The position I am in hasn't posted an exam in over 2 years now, which tells those of us in the job market that there's lots of us with the Exam under our belt competing for the few and far between open positions.

Jay's post was an excellent summary of the area and provided great recommendations. You are also being prudent making sure you are employed before moving. I suggest making sure your salary is at minimum several thousand a year higher here than what you are making now to account for the increased taxes (i.e. income tax) and COL. I know you are looking for change, but there's a dollar cost out of your pocket for fall/winter (Weekly car washes, snow shovels/brushes, heavy winter coats/hats/gloves/boots, heat for your apartment if it's not included). What's your current rent amount?

My hubby and I lived in Tampa for 6 1/2 yrs and we moved back last year. He actually worked for the State of Florida, and now he works for the State of CT. He has only actually worked public sector, so the fact you have the experience working for a state agency might be helpful. What field are you in? My hubby is in IT and the first interview was a phone one and the 2nd one was a skype interview. So, least I know his agency is willing to hire non-local candidates. (his job offer was how we moved back)

The change of weather will be hard. This past winter was my first winter back, and it seemed the snow really missed me. (Although, it was NOT a mutual feeling! )

We live in a 2/2 apartment in Middletown. One good thing about if you look for work in this general area - you can work in Hartford, Waterbury or New Haven. One reason why we picked the apartment we did, was the fact it has central air. Sure, it is not as needed here... however it is so much more energy efficient and just in my opinion MUCH better than window a/c's.

Good luck!
