Hey everyone im new to this thread. I'm a Gay male, engaged to my fiance who is currently serving our country. He will be back stateside in November for Thanksgiving. He's originally from New Haven, and he wants me to go home with him for the holiday to meet his family. This will be my first time visiting Connecticut & I have no idea what to expect.

My questions are:

What is the weather like in November? ( I'm from Florida and we rarely have cold winters).

How are Gays treated in New Haven? (I'm not a "loud, flamboyant" person at all. I'm pretty reserved & quiet. But I have been Heckled by strangers for looking effeminate).

Just want to get a little insight from people who live in the area so I have an idea of what to expect.

Weather in November: Unpredictable. Sometimes brisk but temperate (though being from FL you may find it "cold") to frigid with windchill. A good idea to keep a jumper or coat handy though. Layer to comfort.

How are gays treated: Like anyone else. If you are a jerk you'll be treated like one. If you are friendly you will treated fairly friendly. No one will bat an eye at a Gay couple. Don't expect people to go out of their way to be friendly just because you exist, just how people are around these parts.

Thank you for your honesty. Could you define "cold"?. What temperatures should I expect? Living in Florida the coldest here has been mid 40's.

Highs: 40s/50s, Lows: 20s/30s. November can be gray and wet, and every few years snowy. It's too bad you couldn't visit in October, since that's when CT is at its best. Perfect weather, foliage on the trees, lots of fall activities. Maybe next time.

New Haven is probably the youngest, most liberal city in the state due to Yale, though many students will be home for the holiday. You won't encounter any issues, even if you are 'loud and flamboyant.' Don't go back to FL without having some New Haven pizza!! Everyone has their favorite place in town, you should ask your fiance what his is.

Triangles is worth the trip. Early November we usually get a random high heat above 60 for a few day's. Then a chill always get sick around this time. Do remember a cold November back in early 2000's dipped to below 10 that was cold, never ready for that.

The closest to "below 10" since the year 1999 was in 2013, when Danbury dropped to 13. Prior to that, was Hartford at 5 degrees, but that was November 17, 1996; almost 20 years ago.

The record highs for the month of November was Danbury's 70 in 2011 and prior to that, the next "most-recent" record high was 83 in Burlington, on November 15, 1993 - well over 20 years ago.

OP you are unlikely to encounter highs in the 80's or lows in the teens, during the month of November, in Connecticut. However, just to be safe, stay out of Danbury while you're here

Regarding the gay thing: I think people are more uncomfortable with public displays of affection in general, than they are by one specific couple-preference or another. In other words - we'd rather EVERYONE keep their groping and making out with each other, somewhere other than in public. Gay, straight, black, white, tall, short, big, small. Holding hands, you -might- get an occasional glance but mostly because it's not a common occurrence to see men holding hands in public, not because anyone actually cares.

Last year in New Fairfield -- well north of New Haven -- we had a White Thanksgiving (actually it happened the day before, but there was still snow on the ground Thanksgiving Day). But that's unusual... I would pack enough to be comfortable for anything between 25 - 50 degrees. Basically hoodies, t-shirts, jeans, and a jacket and you should be all set.

EDIT: and an umbrella -- I always think cold rain when I think about November. (Or maybe I'm just thinking of that Guns n Roses song LOL!)

And regarding the gay thing.... Unless you plan on wearing a neon flashing sign or getting down and dirty in public (most of us here, straight or gay, don't do either btw), then (1) no one is going to care; and (2) see number 1. Really... it's a non-issue, unless you want to make it one.
