Up towards Chesire and Mt. Carmel it is nice. Everything before (South) Wilbur Cross Parkway is more or less an extension of downtown New Haven. Once youre North of WCP its calm and quiet.

Whitney Ave area and around East Rock is super nice though.
It depends on your budget and needs, OP. Are you looking for an apartment, or are you looking for a house? Are you looking to raise a family, or is it just yourself, or is it just you and a spouse?
Are you hoping to walk to work or do you expect to drive, or use public transportation.
What's "nice" for some people is totally "unsuitable" for others. If you tell us what kind of "nice" you mean, we can better direct you.
If the only thing I have to go by is "nice" I'd say Ridge Road after Skiff Street is a really nice. So are the farmlands wayyyyy over by Dunbar Hill Road and Main Street. However with the Ridge area, you could walk next door and beg a cup of sugar to make cookies and be back before the butter starts to soften in the bowl. On a farm in the Dunbar Hill area, if you walked next door it might take you 15 minutes in each direction.
Hamden is a nice town but it does have its issues too. Generally the sections of town near New Haven can be rough but then again the Spring Glen neighborhood is very nice. There are tons of shopping and restaurants in town and home prices are fairly reasonable. Schools however do perform under the state averages on the Connecticut Mastery and Connecticut Academic Performance Tests. The link below will give you more information on schools in town. Jay
