What? Those are all private schools that recruit students from all over the world. Also, Vanderbilt, Johns Hopkins, Washington, Tulane, Georgetown and Wake Forest Universities are a few more I can think of off the top of my head.

Anyway, percentage of students from New England that attend:

Harvard-17% (17% south also)
Yale-cant find new england data
Dartmouth-18%
MIT-12% (West and Southeast have highest matriculation)

It's not a state school v private issue.

University of Texas draws from all over the world, as does the Univ of California System, UVA and dozens of others. Cornel is a state school hybrid.

There are good schools all over but certainly a concentration of among the best here in the Northeast. I don't see how this is debatable?

Duke most definitely does not pale in comparison. Perhaps 15 years ago that might- might- have been the case but today it is a top ten school. While I would never place it above Harvard or Yale, these days it is widely regarded as slightly stronger than Brown and my own beloved Dartmouth. To the point that these schools are where the top students in New England go, these are also the schools where top students from everywhere go- or at least a very small percentage of the top students since these schools are ridiculously difficult to get into.

Zero debate there. Between the Ivies, MIT, the service academies and the top liberal arts colleges, this region is well covered with elite academic institutions.

I worded that poorly....Those percentages represent the composition of the student body, not the percent of students from NE that attend the schools.

The point I was making is that when it comes to colleges student in New England have a lot of choices so the top students do not necessarily go to state schools. A little different than in the southeast where there are fewer choices. And yes I include Northeastern which has been attracting the top students interested in STEM professions. If you read where the top students are going you will see Northeastern in the list. I was surprised too but they seem to be very actively pursuing them. Jay

Sorry but I disagree. Have not been impressed by a number of Duke graduates that I have met. Can't say the same about the other schools I mentioned. Still it is a good school no doubt. Jay

I think the point most of us are trying to make is that you don't need to live in NE to attend these schools. Harvard, Yale and friends would all be equally fantastic if you transplanted them into South Carolina, Montana or anywhere else. The top students from New England would still go to them even though they're no longer in New England. Top students go to the top schools, regardless of where they're located.

I thought only kids from New Canaan, Darien, Avon, Farmington, Greenwich, Madison, Westport, Guilford, Ridgefield, Wilton, Redding, and Simsbury went to the top Ivy league schools. What do you mean they recruit globally??
