[FONT='Garamond','serif']I moved from Dallas, Texas to East Hartford, CT sometime in March 2007, and I bought a used car in CT. But then I had to move to a different address in New haven in June, 2007. I was never aware of anything called CAR TAX in texas before. One of my colleague recently mentioned that I need to pay car taxes in CT. What should I do now? I must have missed that bill somewhere at my old address. Do I contact DMV and ask them how much my bill was or do i need to contact somebody else. Please Advise.[/font]

Get all of your dates in order:

1) What are the beginning and ending dates of your residence in East Hartford?

2) What are the beginning and ending dates of your residence in New Haven?

3) When did you purchase the car?

4) When did you REGISTER the car? NOTE: registration is what drives the tax database.

5) When did you notify DMV of your move from East Hartford to New Haven?

Then, go to Tax Assessor for New Haven first with this list. (S)he will look you up on their computer. Pay this amount first. Then, go to Tax Assessor for East Hartford. (S)he will look you up on the computer. Show him/her what you've paid for New Haven. (S)he will make an adjustment for the time that you resided in East Hartford.

If you don't get this rectified before your current registration expires, you will NOT be allowed to renew your registration. Form M-80 will be needed from East Hartford and/or New Haven showing that you've paid delinquent taxes in full.
