It is a great location, but if the true goal is to steal some business from MGM in Springfield, I think Enfield would be better. This way here, it is enticing to the Pioneer Valley residents as well as northern CT residents. Then again, if the outlets get built East Hartford could be a destination of sorts (Did I really just say EH could be a destination?!)

MGM Springfield also scaled down their plans from a 25 story hotel tower to 6 stories out of 'respect' for the city. I honestly would be shocked if MGM Springfield even happens, and if it does, it will be at a reduced scale than what was approved.

The fact that they choose Springfield is a bit surprising.

IMO they targeted a depressed city with images of glitz and glamour and will fail to deliver on both counts.

A casino won't revive a city. They tried it in Shreveport and it isn't working too well. I'm not sure why they picked Springfield, either. Why not put $7 tolls on Interstate 91 northbound so all the gamblers will instead go to East Hartford. What an evil strategy.

The location is not easily accessible from the highway. That is why the Showcase died in the first place, even after the owners poured millions into it for expansions and renovation. I think I would have must rather seen it put in downtown Hartford where it could work with other entertainment venues. Not sure if Hartford was even in the running.

I did think it was interesting that MGM scaled back their plans in Springfield. They are obviously re-evaluating their market which projected 40 percent of their patrons coming from to the south. A casino in East Hartford or one of the other towns in contention would cut into that number. Also by going to a 6 story building can mean they will no longer be building the hotel in steel or concrete. That lowers the cost significantly. Jay

Good god. This on top of outlet mall? Casinos are not doing as well as they used to be, so sure, let's spread that lesser wealth across more in the same state. And decrease taxable property in town. Yeah, that makes sense.

Second announcement in less than a month of a reduced scope of the MGM Springfield casino:

MGM to reduce scope of Massachusetts casino project - WFSB 3 Connecticut

At this rate, whatever gets built in CT to compete may be more impressive than MGM itself.

The reality of construction costs is taking a toll on the project as is the financial profitability. Since Connecticut is proposing to build competition close by, it will obviously impact their bottom line and the amount of money that investors will invest in the project. Still will be a significant addition to Springfield but not quite as impressive as originally proposed. Maybe that is a good thing. Jay
