I had seen this and know a few are true. A childhood friend came to visit several years ago and asked me what was UConn and Huskies. She had moved out of state long before the University of Connecticut became commonly called UConn and before people knew their team mascot was the Huskies.

Also most people call it "The Merritt" not just Merritt. And a lot of old timers call 95 "The Turnpike" in reference to its original name The Connecticut Turnpike. And don't get me started when someone will say "the I-95". The are not from here or even the northeast because no one here use "the" before it. I think that is a California thing which I find very annoying. Jay

The photo of the Merritt is southbound in New Canaan. Metro-North crosses over the bridge.

I definitely identify with the definition of number 16. LOL

880 AM always says "The CT turnpike" which I find odd, since nobody calls it that. I dont see why people saying "the" before 95 annoys you - after all, we say "The Merritt" or "The Hutch" or "The Sawmill". I don't see any difference. JMO.

I know this is CT forum, but what I really hate is the way people in NYC area refer to the highways by name instead of number.

Example, ask someone from NYC "How do I get to JFK airport"? Take the "Van Wyke" LOL why not say take I-678 ?

To get back to CT though one speech quark you can notice is people from CT like to say "Ta" instead of To" Such as; "I'm going ta the store." Saying it fast helps bring out that quark. Listen to people around here speak and I guarantee you'll notice it.

Funny I say "ta" not to. I think the reason they use the name rather than the route number is that they were built before there was a number assigned to it. That is why people call it The Merritt and not Route 15. Jay.

We called the Berlin Turnpike The Berlin Turnpike..and that was in 1963. But I see on this forum a lot of people have moved to CT recently...back in the day you were born in Hartford or New Haven. Nobody moved there!
The Whalers reference is rather odd, they left town a long time ago. Might as well rehash the G.Fox Stores saga, or Bill Savitts Jewelry store, or late night hash browns at the Dobbs house...
