40? No way. It recently took me 20 minutes just to go 2 exits on the Merritt recently in Norwalk during normal rush hour.

New Canaan is a decent commute and your money will go slightly further than Greenwich.

Wilton is the best value/commute ratio.

We're considering Fairfield near the beach but have heard college students can cause many noise issues and the garbage dump scares me (anyone ever heard of people developing cancer from being so close???; does it smell??). Does Fairfield have year round residents, or mostly seasonal and college? We have noticed so much new construction so not sure how the neighborhood is changing. Also looking in to Westport but not sure on young families and commerce/restaurants. Any suggestions and comments are MUCH appreciated. We're excited to settle in and start our family soon thanks!!!
I am originally from Stamford and I had 2 jobs in Greenwich. One job was in Cos Cob (close to Stamford) and one job was on Mill Street near the Port Chester border. When I got married my husband and I moved to Trumbull which are the next exits from Fairfield on the Parkway. We both did the commute from Trumbull to Stamford for about 10 years and every year it got worse.

The reason we looked in Fairfield and Trumbull for a house was because we could not afford a house down county. You are lucky, you have 2X the budget (in relative times) to what we had when looking for a house. Here is my advice for a more stress free life which you can have with your budget. I would look in for a house in Greenwich (Cos Cob and Old Greenwich etc.) or the Noroton section in Darien. I have quite a few cousins in Noroton. Noroton is nice, family friendly and has the least expensive homes in Darien. With a million dollars I think you should be able to find a home there.

New Canaan is nice but nothing to do there. And its land locked.

Here is a house in Noroton.

This. During rush hour, Stamford to Fairfield will be at least an hour on average. With rain, add 20. On school holidays, subtract 20. With snow, add 90 (wish I were joking, but I'm not).

Back roads such as 106, 7, 53, etc will help this.

There's no viable backroad route to Fairfield. I mean, you can parallel-ish the Merritt from about Wilton, but it's a long drive.

I wouldn't say so. The downtown has plenty of dining and shopping and family events, and you're a short drive to Stamford or Norwalk for more things to do.

The shopping in downtown NC is very obscure. I mean, if I need a paper weight or jewels, or maybe a 2k jacket, great, but for every day items, its lacking.
