Even after 35 million dollars was recently spent for renovations to the XL Center, some are proposing further and far bigger and more costly enhancements (250m). The facility already has annual operating losses of approximately 3 million per year which the state must subsidize. The 250m needed for more renovations would be entirely CT taxpayer funded.

Hopefully they say no. State should not fund any project's in the state till this budget and debt crisis is solved. Only money should fund is to any government departments that play a vital role that effects CT resident's, to police/fire/health/EMS/Social Service's, and do any roads/CT infrastructure that needs to be repaired. The rest either have to wait a few years or pay for it out of private loan's or own money simple as that. CT needs to stop wasting and spending money.

I can understand that some people will be against it especially since renovating it will have little to do with their lives. I notice many Whalers fans are happy. If it's not fully on the taxpayers then I'd be for it.

I am not sure why Whalers fans would be happy. The renovation makes no mention of significantly adding seating. It seems most of the improvements are fan experience related (new concourse, more bathrooms, more concessions). The building at its present seating capacity has been deemed too small for an NHL team. I would think that any Whalers fan that wants an NHL team would much prefer a new facility (there is mention in the article that such a facility would cost some 500M).

The XL Center just has to be modernized to become NHL ready. The XL Center (as it is) is not small at all. It's actually bigger than the MTS Centre in Winnipeg where the Jets play. The XL Center is big enough and it has enough seating. I just think the XL Center needs to do a better job utilizing it's space. Theres a lot of unused space and there's so much potential.

Its been almost 20 years since the Whalers left. The likelihood of another NHL moving to Hartford at this point is slim. Therefore, spending $250 million to upgrade the XL Center makes no sense in light of the state's budgetary issues.

$250 million? All at taxpayers' expense? Wow, the fiscal recklessness of this state is astounding. Folks, there IS no sports team coming to this city. Get over it. And before you accuse me of not wanting this city to succeed, let me stop you by saying, no. I just want you to wake up and smell reality. It's not happening. And public dollars are not to subsidize THAT. If you find this acceptable then you're part of the problem.

Correct. Hartford showed it cannot sustain a pro team. Leagues do not return to cities its size once they were given a chance, but failed.

This proposal is to bring the XL Center into the 21st century. The facility is over 40 years old and needs significant improvements if it is to ever make money or even break even. Jay
