Made a similar thread in the Syracuse forum. UCONN is coming off a win vs Scared Heart. I was watching the Big 10/ACC Challenge Games, but UCONN seemed in control the whole game except for the first few minutes. As an Orange Fan at heart, UCONN still interests me and still is a school I applied to.

11/13 W 100-56 vs Maine
11/17 W 85-66 vs New Hampshire
11/21 W 83-58 vs Furman *
11/25 W 74-60 vs Michigan *
11/26 L 76-79 vs Syracuse *
11/27 L 70-73 vs Gonzaga *
12/2 W 82-49 vs Sacred Heart

Record: 5-2
Next Game: 12/8 vs Maryland

* Battle 4 Atlantis Game

I live down the street from Sacred Heart, have been going to games since they moved from D-2 to D-1 and know the old coach & new coach fairly well.

This was strictly a money/financial investment for SHU. I think they go out west to California or Las Vegas right before Christmas, so the money they got by having UConn beat them to a pulp probably paid for that trip and then some.

Just read in the Courant that the University of Maine is offering steep discounts to students from other New England states. I believe they are trying to attract more students. This is particularly interesting in light of UCon's recent announcement that they are considering raising tuition by 31 percent over the next four years. The discount for Connecticut students would be $9,000 bringing it close to UConn's in-state tuition. Will be interesting to see UCon n and other state school's reaction to this move. Do you think they will reciprocate? Will UConn lower its proposed increase? Jay

It's actually going to be a $15,000 discount, making it right in line with UConn:

UMaine Hopes To Lure Connecticut Students With Low Tuition Rate - Hartford Courant

I say it's about time. I'm surprised the New England state universities don't already have reciprocity agreements set up--at least discounted tuition, not necessarily making it equivalent to the home state. UMass offers it but only for select majors. Minnesota/Wisconsin have had this for decades. I think it makes for more diverse student populations and would promote excellence through competition on merits.

Actually it is not just UMass, it is all of the state universities in New England but the agreement is that it only applies to majors that are not offered at that students state university. So if I want to major in say Landscape Architecture, since UConn does not offer it, I can go to URI for the instate tuition rate. This however would apply to all majors. You are right the discount is $15,000. Not sure why I thought it was $9,000. $15,000 is a lot of money. Would make me consider applying there. Jay

Well UConn Trustees did it. They raised tuition by 31 percent over the next 4 years. I really think this is a bad move on their part. What I don't like is how the media is not really saying it. The Courant had the approval buried inside the paper. Their original article a couple of weeks ago was front page. I am not sure what can be done about it but I plan on writing my State Representative questioning it. So you know I have no vested interest in the increase. I just think it is excessive. Anyone else willing to do this too? Jay

When I was in law school, there was reciprocity such that students from Mass, RI, NH and VT got discounted tuition to UConn and UMaine. It wasn't in state tuition but it was substantially less than out of state. The reasoning was that none of those states at the time had a state sponsored law school. I'm not sure if they still do this as I believe that Mass and NH now have their own state law schools.
