Hi,
I am a mother of 3.5 year old boy. We are looking to move in a best and affordable school district in CT. I have browsed this thread in this forum and concluded the following point (please correct me if I wrong as I have no idea about CT):

1: We found that West Hartford, Avon, Glastonbury, Farmington, Rocky hill area(s) are among the best school district for Sp. Ed. program in that rigion. Please help me choose the best one.

2: We are going to rent the apartment and our budget is $ 2000 per month max.

3: My son has IEP and currently he is in sp ed school in westchester NY. They have also provided him additional 4 hour ABA and 1 hr speech at home.

4: Any idea that CT will take this IEP and continue to provide the same services?

Please Please help me.

Anticipating your valuable suggestions.

You can't go wrong. Glastonbury just revamped their Spec Ed program early 2015 taking on a new Director and few other's. If had to say WH, Farmington, Glastonbury, and Avon in that order.

I am curious as to why you think the special education department was revamped? They did hire a new director because the old one was promoted.

Just a few new people and some new ideas no huge changes as of yet. Big plus with WH is there Spec Ed ties in with Hartford U a lot of the students going for Spec Ed Teacher are involved in WH school's.

My understanding of the IEP for a new resident to the state is this. The state of CT must provide an identical or similar IEP to start off. Eventually, with every new student, a new evaluation will be done and then the IEP may change. How long until that new evaluation is done will depend on the school system.

These are things you really should discuss with each individual school district before you take up residence.

OP is looking for legit info and experience. Not from somebody who has no idea and just googles.

Since all the towns you mentioned will provide what he needs, you might want to take into consideration your commuting time, and housing costs. In west hartford, you will be lucky to get a tiny house for that amount. You will get more for your money in the other towns. Don't forget, you will pay property tax on your cars. Farmington has the lowest property tax rate. It can be challenging commuting across the ct river. Where will you be working? What social community will you be most comfortable in, since that will be your child's social community too.
