Hi!
I'm really wanting to rent a waterfront house on a beach and have heard this place is nice. I'm not too much into commercilaized places like Virginia Beach or Myrtle Beach, so I was thinking this would be nice. The longer I live in the mountains of Pa in a rural town, the more I don't want to be around these bigger beaches.
Can anyone tell me about this beach? I have a teen and young adult daughter, we just want to relax, cook our own meals from our rental, and maybe do some fishing and crabbing. A quaint small town is a plus!

Hawks Nest Beach in old Lyme is a sedate waterside area that is quiet- it is nothing like VA beach or Myrtle Beach.

Hawk's Nest is not what you seem to think. It is a tiny summer sort of compound - cute, but nothing super quaint. It is along the shoreline in Lyme. There are a few..and I mean few..restaurants and convenience things. Most of all I think people are there to enjoy the beach. There are always a lot of kids running around, so if you like that you are all set.

Yes, this is exactly what I would be looking for. I have looked at the area on Google Earth, and I can see it is very rural. No water parks and mini golfs on every corner right?
How is the water? Clean to swim in? Since it is on the sound, are there typically waves?
Are their any local fishing piers or state parks?

I do not recall there being mini golf places or water 'parks' of any kind.

The area is rather 'Old New England' neighborhood as member Dougnaie pointed out and not a tourist mecca of any kind.

A few restaurants and Stop N Go stores etc, along the Post Road (US 1) and on state road 156 into the 'Sound View' section of town near the beach.

Water is clean at the eastern end of Long Island & Block Island sound- certainly fine for swimming; waves will not be robustly high on average, compared to areas further east as the sound opens to the Atlantic ocean. There is a State Park 4-5 miles to the east, in Niantic, 'Rocky Neck State Beach' a pleasant beach open to the public- it can become crowded from Memorial Day to Labor day in nice weather.

There is a fishing pier in New London I believe.

Be careful of which cottage you get. We had an ok one but the lady who rented the cottage next to us was not as lucky (and she paid more). The cabinet doors were falling off in the kitchen, the floor tiles were coming up, basically some of them are renovated and others are falling apart. Our kitchen was gross. I had to scrub it down before using. There were no pots or pans. I was too grossed out to use any of the dishes. We went to walmart for paper dishes and plastic utensils.
