Great eats up that way and your the closest to the outdoors in an urban area in CT.

We are not exactly in the same position with Vicki419 but we are close so I didn't want to start a new thread. My husband found a job in Pratt & Whitney in Middletown so we will move to CT probably next month. We have two and half years old daughter so I need to find a good day care for her and also my sister is leaving with us and she wants to study in Community College and she doesn't have a car so she has to use public transportation. I am looking for a right place like family friendly, safe, not too isolated, having public transportation and I like living in a walking distance to Downtown and if we can find a place close to ocean with 20 min driving it would be awesome. Do you have any reccomendations which city would be good for us?

Wow thank you for all of your responses! Most likely I will end up quitting and finding work in CT. Hubby works full time so I think less travel for him the better. We are noticing it's harder to find multi family homes that fit our "ideal" location/yard/privacy and definitely in more busy areas. I know we will have to settle on something. We are planning on moving into the multi family and renting out the other side/unit. I found some in Berlin, any more thoughts on this town?

Middletown has a community college but limited transportation services. Capital in Hartford has bus routes on campus goes to certain towns near by it like Newington, Berlin, or Rocky Hill. Another place is Manchester CT. Manchester has their own CC, can go to Capital, or Goodwin. Believe they have decent transportation services up that way. Not a far drive, but Berlin area is much closer to Middletown. Now if wanted to be near the water and near Middletown your in between is Durham straight shot f on Durham to Hammonasset.

Oh also I guess any towns we should avoid would be helpful to know, to help narrow down our search. I read somewhere to avoid Meriden. Thanks again!

Berlin is a nice town and convenient to Middletown. Schools there perform above the state averages so they can be considered good. There are no bad areas of the town that I know of. Might be a good option.

Middletown itself is a small city and schools there struggle. I have seen two family homes on large lots in Hebron (near RHAM High & Middle Schools) but have no idea if any are for sale. Two family homes are mostly found in denser more populated areas. Most more rural towns just want single family homes on larger lots. Jay

I would disagree with this. IMO if a person needed to depend on public transportation Middletown would be one of the best cities to live in. Middletown operates it's own public transit bus system called "Middletown Area Transit" Bus transfers are honored between the MAT and CT Transit system. There is a bus that runs to Middlesex Community College on Route "A" MAT also operates a night schedule Monday thru Saturday until about 10pm (depending on where you start from)

To take full advantage of the MAT system including the night schedule one would want to live inside Middletown and close to the route(s). While the MAT system does run outside of Middletown, you won't be able to take advantage of the night schedule if you are outside of that area.

Schedules can be found here
http://www.middletownareatransit.org/busschedules.php

There are also a lot of restaurants on Main St where a person could look for a job. There are also grocery stores and Dept stores too. All being on the MAT bus route.

Middletown schools are OK, but when your child reaches school age you may want to look into the neighboring towns such as, Cromwell, Durham, Berlin.

If you put in the effort, Middletown schools will get you to the same places the other towns will. Middletown's new-ish high school is gorgeous. Heading up there for a track meet right now and will salivate over their athletic complex.
