Needed to head over to the DMV this afternoon, so I used the tool on their website that allows one to check current wait times..

Old Saybrook: a nearly FOUR HOUR wait for registrations.
Willimantic: just under THREE HOUR wait.
Norwich: 2.5 hour wait.

What a joke. Yeah, DMV's are not supposed to be an easy in-and-out experience...but this is SAD. Wound up at the Norwich branch....2/3 of the lanes were closed. They had a total of 3 people processing registrations/license renewals for a crowd of about 80 people.

WHERE ARE THE SERVICES THAT MY RIDICULOUSLY HIGH TAX DOLLARS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PROVIDING?!

Considering they're only open until 4 today, ALL lanes should be staffed! That would likely make for no more than a 30 minute wait.

This state is a freaking joke. Sign me up for heading to Raleigh, Texas, or Indianapolis within the next 5 years.

I've only done this once, and it worked. But I heard that it is best to get there an hour and a half before it closes because that is when they open all of the lines. I don't know if this is procedure or if I just got lucky.

I can imagine a couple reasons for the observed phenomenon of faster service near closing time:

1) They are obligated to serve all customers that arrived before closing time.
2) They are obligated to stay at work until all customers are served.

Basically they stop acting like government employees and start to care about efficiency once their dinner is on the line.

You should submit that to Guinness. Has to be a CT DMV record.

True.

I think the overall DMV experience is best depicted in the newer Disney film Zootopia (those with small children who saw it will know what I mean)
