Question about fines for littering in CT. Driving in Mass today they had signs up for littering was a $10,000 fine. Surprisingly think it is a good deterrent very clean roads and sidewalks.

Do you agree CT needs to utilize a heavy fine for littering? Think it will clean up a lot of trash on the roads and sides of the roads in CT.

Connecticut's local roads and highways are disgusting with the enormous amount of litter on them. Unfortunately I don't think any fine amount will fix it as one's odds of getting caught littering are essentially zero.

I think those signs are a bluff. There's no way a cop will pull over and will hand you a $10,000 ticket. I think the sign meant UP to $10,000. You'd probably get community service or a small fine around $100. Having a heavy fine like that is supposed to scare people and rethink about littering. Even if you do litter the odds are very slim to get caught unless you're dumb enough to do in front of a cop.

Still think it's a good deterrent. Not a fan of LEARNING enforcing laws like this, but amount of trash on the roads in CT is reaching a point of ridiculousness.

Do I agree? not at all...

I actually started this thread about garbage along 495 in Mass earlier this year.

So clearly those signs do NOT work.

I also have never noticed a huge litter issue in CT like I do in MA. sounds like more laws that accomplish nothing.

Here is an idea. have some sense of pride in your state and don't throw your garbage out the window....

Trash it's annoying in CT. When I run in Waterbury broken glass, food, bags of garbage, contraceptives, needles, random hospital stuff, rabdom illicit drug equipment, and so forth. Route 8 has the same issue and some odd reason lots of random construction debris: Nails; tools; wood; metal pieces; so forth.

Add in broken glass in the streets as well.

I haven't noticed this at all. The problem might be localized to certain areas.

Trust me Waterbury has lots of litter, then from Waterbury mix master on to Route 8 South down to Shelton following the Route 8 corridor to the exit passed the Home Depot always is filled with litter. It's a nuisance.

I haven't noticed much trash in CT or even MA for that matter. I think it's restricted to certain areas.

I do remember litter being a big issue in the 70's and 80's. I think the Fed Govt had a big advertising campaign to try to stop it. Remember the Indian who would shed a tear ? Also, the 5 cent deposit for cans/glass was imposed around 1980 which probably helped curb the littering.

FWIW, the dirtiest place I've seen so far in terms of litter(ing) was Wilkes Barre, PA. Perhaps I arrived during a garbage truck strike or something, but it was so bad that I remember it to this day. (this was about 2011)

Also, honorable mention goes to Vermont, but their litter isn't thrown on the road, instead its in peoples yards piling up an rusting away.

I tend to notice an abundance of trash near highways, especially 95. It seems as if tossing crap out the window is widely accepted. Sometimes with overpasses, the trash makes its way to local streets.
