Hartford area is the best area for someone with a Asian culture from food to Temples. Not as the Temples on the West Coast there are a few smaller temples and a Buddhist Mediation center that is connected with an area where Tibetan Monks stay.

However, right near West Hartford is Newington the greatest Sushi restaurant in the state!!!

Little over 60,000 people in West Hartford area.
Inland CT I enjoy much more then lower FFC. Less access to NYC. However, your close to New Haven take a train to the City. Close to the outdoors. Near a few college campuses. Primary/Secondary education is good in WH. Affluent area in the process of gentrification. Surrounded by golf courses. Some traffic, but not as terrible as LA or lower FFC.

Transportation is going through a change up that way.

Bit too crowded for my liking, but not as crowded as CT coast line.

Some decent bars and upscale wine bars up in the Hartford area. Close to a few CT wineries. Can escape do a cruise on the CT river. Decent travel time to Boston. Comedy clubs. Some good restaurants.

Amazing local park's in the area.

Near by you have the Strip, the Arena up there, 2 baseball stadiums , XFINITY Music Venue, the Shubert Theater, New Britain Art Museum, Convention Center, Science Center, and Mark Twain House. Think there is a blue music theater up there in Hartford aa well as a theater that serves wine/drinks pretty cool. Plans to build a Casino in Hartford.

Close to great shopping choices with 3 malls near by and an upscale shopping center in Hartford. Also near the Strip in Newington big box stores, motels, bowling, laser tag, andgo-kart racing. More artsy travel through the Farmington River Valley.

Near Lake Compounce.

Active a runner CT has had its history of Boston Marathon wins and Olympians. Have the Hartford Track Club up that way. Hartford has its own road races through out the year. You have the Hartford Marathon. Believe 2 other marathons in the State. A slew of ultra races. Also hiking great trails up that way with the Blue Trail.

Only issue is with being near big cities is crime and flows into adjacent towns/cities. Hartford been having issue with Crime, but lower then LA.

My current LA commute is 2 hours (1 way) so the though of a 20-30 minute commute makes me giddy with excitement!

Any comment on schools, friendliness, etc. My wife is from Japan - so I would like to call home a place that does not stare at us (even if it is with good intentions) because we are Asians. Also - for those of you that have lived in CA - I think you will appreciate this - I hate the fact that in LA, you really don't know your neighbors other than an occasional wave. I have lived next to my current neighbor for 6 years and haven't said more than 10 words to him....so really looking for a community that truly cares for one another and almost treats each other like family...not sure that CT offers this - but thought I would throw it out there!

Thanks again!
Glad you realize that Fairfield County is not a good place to live for someone commuting to Windsor.

To begin with, West Hartford is not a city. Though it is one of the bigger communities in the state with 60,000+ residents, it is considered to be a town and some people are very touchy about that. Cities around here have a negative connotation so calling a town like West Hartford a city may get a raised eyebrow from the locals.

People in Connecticut are reserved. They respect other people's privacy so they generally do not intrude. They will be nice to you if you approach them but don't expect to have them coming running over asking all types of questions and volunteering all kinds of information. The best way for you and your family to meet people is to get out there and find people with similar interests. You will likely meet a lot of parents through your children so try to find a few that have similar interests.

I do not think your family being Asian is going to be an issue. To be honest, my children have friends that are different ethnicities and we don't even notice. We have laughed one time when someone casually mentioned us being good friends someone who is Asian and we literally had to think for a second who it was. I think most of our friends think that way as well. I am sure a more diverse community like West Hartford is similar. Jay

Inaccurate, West Hartford is as gentrified as it will get. Some may argue it never gentrified at all, because it never had to...

Elmwood could see more gentrification, but you're right about the rest of the town.

While I am quoting Jay's response - really this comment is for everyone. Thanks so much! VERY helpful information. I appreciate all of the discussion. I think West Hartford sounds were I may want to be. I may also want to consider South Windsor - but just don't want to get too country. West Hartford sounds like a great city...oh excuse me...town :-) My wife and I lived in Omaha and never had issues being asian....then we moved to Youngstown, OH - and oh my god it was like we were from mars. We would walk into a restaurant and people would literally turn around and stare at us. Not in a racist way - just in a way that made us uncomfortable because we felt out of place. We litterally quadrupled the asian population in Youngstown :-)

Just googled West Hartford... wow beautiful place. And there are some great houses for good prices. I imagine a house like this would cost double in LA: 193 Sedgwick Rd, West Hartford, CT 06107 - Home For Sale and Real Estate Listing - realtor.com®

Good luck and hope you come back to update us on how it's been once you move!

There is at least 20, might be stretching a bit, various Asian restaurants in West Hartford from Cantonese to Thai to Sushi to Korean. 3 Asian/Indian food markets there kind of line up on the same street closer to Newington.

This is a beautiful home but is not necessarily the best example of homes to use. Sedgwick is a very busy road so it is not a desirable location. That house has been on the market for a year now which is insanely long for West Hartford. To me that means something is wrong. Likely overpriced. Also note the taxes on it are over $15,000. Unfortunately West Hartford taxes are very high but the services are excellent. Residents don't seem to mind paying a bit more for all that the town has to offer. Jay
