There's been a growing response to the idea that "mainstream America" is some small all-white town in Nebraska. Everyone's aware of the demographic shifts. Surprisingly, the town that, demographically, looks most like America: New Haven, Connecticut.

‘Normal America’ Is Not A Small Town Of White People | FiveThirtyEight

The factors used were age, race, education and ethnicity.

Fascinating.

Also interesting is that what people keep calling "mainstream America" was mainstream-- 50 years ago.

I'm not sure this information is useful-- but it is interesting.

An oasis of the elite upper class surrounded by poverty with a disappearing middle class? Yes, I can see the resemblance to the country at large.

I'm not sure if that's really an honest characterization of New Haven...

If anything, it's not an honest characterization of America, since New Haven is on a worse trajectory:

"The divide between New Haven's have and have-nots is growing, and at a more rapid clip than the state and the country, according to an analysis by DataHaven, which collects and analyzes demographic information on the region."

New Haven divided by growing income disparity

I find it sad, actually. Wealthy white and Asian neighborhoods adjacent to extremely poor, mostly black neighborhoods where crime is sky high - that's New Haven. If that's "America", I'm very concerned.

Edit to add: after reading the autbor's methodology, it seems he cherry picked certain demographics to obtain the results he desired. Not surprising, in today's environment of slanted everything.

Haha, indeed. While ostensibly true , and certainly a funny satire, those were not variables measured in the study. Ironically, the study , according to mlassofs post, only included the variables were are supposed to blindly ignore, such as age, race, educational attainment and ethnicity. Good thing Susan in HR isn't on the institutional review board!

It is referring to the entire New Haven area, not just the city.

Why would Nate Silver who was born in Michigan, went to college in Chicago and London, and lives in New York cherry pick data points to elevate New Haven? He has no connection to New Haven what-so-ever.

All part of the liberal conspiracy, I guess.

The idea that the country is becoming less white and more diverse is really noncontroversial.
