We'll be driving from the NYC area again this year to visit the grandkids on Cape Cod. Last year the weekend traffic on 95 was amazing, and I'm assuming it hasn't gotten any better. Does anyone have any tips on the best times of day (or night) to avoid the traffic. Tks

What day of the week are you going up there?

Basically, to get up there...either leave at 4am or after 8PM.

I wish it was a weekday, but it has to be a Saturday or Sunday. Leaving early is not problem.

Saturdays have been a nightmare on 95 in the summer, as have Sunday evenings. Id say early Saturday morning, or early Sunday morning, until about 9 am.

Plan your trip very carefully.

The traffic over either of the two Cape Cod bridges is a disaster in summer. You want to be over those bridges before 8 AM on a summer weekend.

Since you also have to contend with 1-95 traffic, maybe consider leaving NYC at 2 or 3 AM or earlier , depending on how fast you drive and how many stops you may make.

Agree - plan on getting to the Cape before 8am. I'd even say before 7am, if possible. If you leave early, you should be able to zip along 95 at a pretty good pace - 75-80mph. Try to avoid making any stops, if possible.

I used to plan on being on 95 after 10 or 11 pm (leaving greenwich area, towards new haven), and I would zip along. It was great.
Lately, though, I've had a few really bad trips leaving that late, because of construction projects. Like a one hour trip taking 2-3 hours. Will make you crazy.
I've had the best luck being on 95 from about 8 to 11. This may not help you, unless you want to arrive at the cape late at night...just something to consider!! Maybe there's an early morning time that they consistently wrap up any construction projects, say 4-ish, and being on the road after that time but before around 8, would probably be as safe a bet as any.

Just FYI - 95 is already jammed from Greenwich through New Haven (and beyond) on a Thursday at 2 pm.
