Hi everyone!

Our family will be relocating for a job in Greenwich in a few weeks. I grew up on Long Island but we have been away from the NY area for over 10 years now. Any advice for areas to find a rental with a short (30ish min) commute to Greenwich? We have two small children under the age of 3 so I would love an area with young families. We don't mind a smaller house or apartment but our max budget would be $3600 a month. Any hidden areas we should look that don't come up on all the usual google searches?!

Thank so much!

Stamford, 10mins away, has plenty of rentals and young families.
But 3600 - why not rent IN Greenwich. Riverside in Greenwich has good schools.
Darien is nicer - you probably can find a place for 3600, and has best schools.
Or Rowayton.

I live in Trumbull but I am originally from Stamford. 1/2 hour commute is tough in and around Greenwich. That is why I am now in Trumbull. In Stamford a lot of families live in the "Mid Ridges" and Newfield area. It is a very safe area too.

Just to give you and idea.

Mid-Ridges

Newfield Area

This is a big house so I am sure there are smaller homes in this area within your range.

Newfield/Springdale area

Oaklawn area

I know this house is too expensive but it is very over the top. My brother lives in this area and there are a lot of smaller homes that you could afford. On both ends of Oaklawn there is shopping on High Ridge Road and Newfield.

The areas above would be very good for a young family.

Give yourself a short commute and do Greenwich itself, Darien or New Canaan. In Greenwich, Riverside and Old Greenwich are best for families but your budget might be short for both (may be able find something in Cos Cob however), whereas Darien or New Canaan you can likely rent a small house if that's what you're looking for. If your job is near Greenwich Avenue then train commuting is also a possibility and I would say check out the Gables in Old Greenwich or rentals in the Noroton Heights train station area of Darien or the Avalon complex in Darien (both walkable to train). If schools are not of concern for now then you can also consider Stamford (North, Newfield, Glenbrook/Springdale) and Rowayton.

Look in Greenwich, why bother anywhere else.
Refer to the last several posts on the "Conn Transportation Future" thread. You won't have to deal with any of that nonsense.

I didn't think $3600 could get you into Greenwich but I looked and you could probably just get in. There are a few houses and townhouses. There are some in the Sheep Hill & Valley Road area. Even though it is near the Westside Stamford border that area of Greenwich is good.

The only problem I see with the Greenwich houses is this. The houses that are in and about $3600 are on Main Roads. I had a boyfriend that lived on Sheep Hill and although nice I would not call it family friendly for little children. For your commute I would say yes, these houses/apartments in Greenwich are good. But for neighborhood atmosphere the areas I pointed out in Stamford would probably be better.

I would take a ride in the areas I pointed out in Stamford and then in the area you could afford in Greenwich. Although I never lived there I know a lot about Greenwich as my 2 sister-in-laws, friends and family are from Greenwich. I also worked 2 jobs in Greenwich, one on River Road and one on Mill Street. I LOVE Greenwich but it is a matter of what kind of "feel" in a neighborhood you can afford in each town.

I didn't think Darien or New Canaan would be possible. There are some sweet little houses in the Noroton section of Darien that you could afford. I had a cousin that lived in this area and it is very family friendly. This area right near the I-95 too.

There are also some small homes and townhomes in New Canaan but I have a funny feeling the townhomes are filled with seniors & singles. I looked at townhomes in New Canaan before I bought my house in Trumbull. That was the impression of who I thought lived in the townhomes in New Canaan.

We also looked at New Canaan townhomes and it's true- many of them were built as age-restricted specifically so that people with children didn't move in and add to the school population. I believe some are even co-ops with rules that basically make it inconvenient for families to live there. I didn't mention there is also an Avalon in NC and there were a few more families there when we looked.
In Darien the Kensett development was supposedly built as luxury downsizing for empty nesters (but not age-restricted) and ended up being a lot of families in the end (units are between $1.6-$2+ million though). Noroton area of Darien is awesome if you can find a good rental.

I am going to give one great point about those Townhomes in New Canaan. They are in an awesome walkable area right near the downtown. Here is the complex we were looking at. They are right near a park with a playground. We really wanted a SFH but those townhomes in New Canaan in that awesome walkable location were mighty enticing.
