Looking for some cute areas with things for kids to do for a weekend trip. Coming from NY so driving isn't an issue. Kids are 7 and 3.

Mystic! Aquarium, Seaport, Downtown - there's a drawbridge that goes up every hour and the best ice cream ever (Drawbridge Ice Cream). There's an hour-long riverboat cruise (Mystic Express) that leaves out of the Downtown drawbridge area on the hour every hour. Mistick Village is a fun little shopping area with a couple General Stores, kite shop, toy store, Christmas store, and some fancy jewelry/clothing/collectible shops.

There's also a children's museum in Niantic and a hokey used bookstore like you've never seen before called The Book Barn (outside book sheds, free-roaming cats, baby goats to feed, and a couple little playsets for the kids to climb/swing on.

Agree Niantic is a fun little town. For cute little towns on the shore I also like Guilford but I can't think of many things for the kids to do there. Essex is a good bet too with the steam train and CT river Museum.

Guilford/Madison - Guilford historic homes and picturesque, Norman Rockwellesque green and town center. Gorgeous coastline in both towns, including Hamonasset State Park - best beach in CT.

Essex/Chester - Essex has the CT River Museum, Steam Train (good for kids), beautiful historic center, great riverfront. Chester is a very unique looking and historic town center.

Mystic/Stonington Borough - Aquarium, Mystic Seaport, Mystic and Stonington Borough have historic fishing village centers. Stonington is a hidden gem with narrow old streets a la Newport.

Litchfield/Kent - Litchfield has a great town center. Rolling hills, great area to drive. Lake Waramaug is beautiful. Kent Falls for hiking, which is good for kids.

That's a pretty good start.

In western CT you'll find a lot of hiking, a few animal oriented kids locations - Action Wildlife Refuge in Goshen, High Wire Animal Farm in Woodbury, and a couple of children's museums -- Ever Wonder in Newtown and Kidsplay in Torrington. Quassy in Middlebury is a cute amusement park for the under 10 crowd that has a recently expanded water park. There is also a tourist train at the Railroad Museum of New England in Thomaston.

For your kids' ages, Mystic is going to offer the most fun and entertainment. If they were 5+ years older, I would say Branford, Guilford, Madison.
