I've attempted to do some research on this, but it boggles my mind still. I personally won't be involved in this, but a friend of mine who I might potentially get an apartment with needs to get out of Mass, and for the time being still works in the state and would need to transfer to CT at some point down the road. What are the tax implications of this? By reading around there seems to be some sort of a credit you get in Connecticut? Are taxes owed in both states? It's honestly just confusing. Any help would be really appreciated!

You pay tax to the state where you work. Then you get a credit on that tax paid in the state where you live.

dazzleman is correct.

This is pretty common - especially for CT residents working in NY. But, I'm sure it happens both ways fairly regularly between CT and RI, Mass and NY.

Yes, I know a couple of people that live here and work across the border in Massachusetts. I also know a few Massachusetts residents that work here as well. It is not uncommon at all. Their employer should help them with the paperwork. Jay
