Hello all!

My fiance and I are moving from Buffalo, NY to the Tri-State area towards the end of the year (Late November/Early December). I will be working in downtown Stamford.

Both of us are in our early thirties.

I am not at all familiar with the area and would LOVE thoughts, suggestions, recommendations on areas to look into for housing.

We would be looking for a two bedroom apartment for the time being, which would allow us to house guests from out of town. After looking around a bit it looks like spending $1600+/mo. is the norm. I am okay with spending around $2k/mo.

I have heard some good things about living in downtown Stamford.

I would say that we would value the following things, in no particular order. I certainly understand that we will not be able to accommodate all.
- Proximity to work
- Proximity to social area (restaurants, bars, shopping, etc)
- Proximity to ocean
- Dog Friendly (parks would be great)

I have looked at Norwalk a bit. Appears to be a 25-30 minute commute on the average.

We are certainly excited to explore the new city!!!

I sincerely thank the forum for your thoughts. This will be really helpful in us finding our next home!

- Chris

Your budget is a bit low for most parts of Stamford, particularly downtown.

What would be a more realistic budget? $2500? $3k?

As others have said, you need to up budget if you want a 2 bedroom. $2,500 is a good starting point.

If you can live with a 1 br, you can get something decent for $2,000/month.

You might be able to do slightly better on rent, but with your other preferences essentially met, in neighborhoods just north of downtown such as Glenbrook and Springdale (about 1 to 3 miles north). However, the housing tends to be older and not as "luxurious" as the newer apartments downtown. There are also a number of condos for rent in those areas.

Like Robert said, away from Downtown fringe neighborhoods you should be able to find something in a more reasonable budget range.
