So I heard an owl the other night at 3 am. Googled the sound and discovered it was a barred owl. Now I am really interested in learning more about them and hopefully hearing and seeing more. Is there any resource or group in CT that offers owl watching and education - if that even exists?

I have a few resident barred owls- they are so cool! What area in CT do you live? CT has a pretty active Audubon Society. I would contact the one closest to you. I know Milford, Glastonbury, and Fairfield all have active Audubon centers. I'm not sure where else in the state they are but their website is probably a good starting point.

New Canaan Nature center is great. They have several owls along with American eagle and other birds of prey. Knowledgeable staff.

We have a pretty large parliament of owls (formal term for "group", go figure) in the woods behind our house and they make quite a ruckus in the evening. That said, the coolest run in we've had was after Snowtober (Oct 2011 snowstorm). We were swinging by to check if power had been restored (haha, not even close), and perched on our rock wall was a snowy owl. Haven't seen any since in CT.

I've had owls take prey right outside our family room window. The screeching from the animal being caught is a bit disturbing, especially the first time it happened.

We came across a snowy owl while pulling into our driveway a couple of winters ago. It was in the road eating something and it took off once my headlights hit it. It was an amazing sight. They are quite large birds.

I believe that at Hammonasset State Park in Madison, they have owl walks certain times of the year. No guarantee you will see any, but probably worth a try. The suggestion about the nature center in New Canaan was a good one.

I saw one right around that same timeframe in New Fairfield. Never before, and never since. Coolest thing ever -- Flew right in front of my car (very low) as I was driving down our road.

Small world. I'm sure CT was one of the few spots covered in snow at that time of year south of Hudson Bay--- perhaps the snowy owls sought us out? Instinct?

That's amazing! I would love to see one! I just moved here from VA a month or so ago, and I love all the wild life I'm seeing (although we had a lot in VA too, I'm just living in a more nature-dense area here).
