I drove on Route 34 over Stevenson Dam this weekend (Monroe/Oxford) and noticed how old and crumbling it is. It really doesn't feel safe driving over it. There are no shoulders, it's very skinny (MAYBE 30 feet wide) and there are 90 degree turns at each end. So when an 18 wheeler has to cross...which happens often...all traffic has to come to a complete stop to allow them to pass.

I remember hearing there is a possibility of a new bridge but given our states deficit, I can't see that happening. At the very least, it needs modernizing. It's a really busy road and very hazardous.

Anyone know if there are any plans in the works to replace/modernize it?

The state has had a project to build a bridge either across Lake Zoar north of the dam or across the Housatonic to the south for at least 15 to 20 years now. There are issues with each though. Above the dam people complained that a bridge would ruin the lake. Below the dam are eagle nesting areas so there is no easy answer. I do know that this bridge replacement is in the Governors Transportation plan but until funding is found it is likely not going to be built in the near future. Jay

Look like they are planning to close the bridge for a month overnight. This is a pain because the only alternative routes are through either Monroe/Shelton or through Oxford and Newtown... when will they just build a new bridge?? This road is such a hazard..

Fun fact: the Stevenson Dam Bridge will be 100 years old in 2019.

Architecturally, the bridge is very attractive. It does need significant modernizing though.

My cousins husband was in a very bad accident going over this bridge on his bike a few weeks ago. Because of that darn turn at the end.
