Much of Branford isn't lowlying so it's been alright through both Irene and Sandy. There are a few neighborhoods right on the water that had some wind and water damage but nothing like neighboring East Haven, where many homes were destroyed.

Agreed. The storm surge is what does the most damage, especially when the storm hits at high tide. But that's pretty much limited to areas right on the water. As a result I know several people who have raised their houses in anticipation of the next hurricane, but again, these are people who live on the water. Go even a little bit away from the waterfront and the storm issues are basically downed trees and power lines and maybe some minor flooding. Not much different than most of CT.
